A wet day spent contesting the memorial trophy at Ally Pally. Â The start was delayed by over three hours to allow the pitch to dry after morning rain. Â Lunch was a good feast. Â A timed contest ensued with UCS inserted.
UCS batted well on a damp track through intermittent drizzle to make 170odd. Â JB and Mike had opened the bowling with tight spells that suffered from butter fingered fielders. Â John Hill pulled a calf muscle in the first few overs. Â Nuggsy disappeared for twenty in his first over to waste their efforts but after that slipped and slided his way to a five fer as the pitch disintegrated but the fielders held their catches. Â Craig bowled with good control from the other end. Â Allan bowled three overs at the end but the butter finger fielders returned.
Tea was good if a little lacking in cake.
The chase was never likely to succeed due to a lack of batting strength, ball snaring outfield and the quagmire of a pitch. Â UCS bowled well and only Lay with 20 in the top order provided lengthy resistance. Â Our cause was not helped by some bad calling (poor Ben victim of Steve's overambition) and some questionable umpiring. Â However, Nuggsy and Mike played out the final few overs comfortably enough as the pitch squelched and puddles formed.
