The Final Autumnal Glow
Pacific v President's XI at Wray Crescent
Sat 18 Oct 2008 at 11.30am
Won 15 Runs
Friendly fixture

A fine sunny day gave the perfect setting for the annual Pacific XI vs. President’s XI clash. The game finally got started after the confusion and delay with issues around parking, maintenance to the ground running late, an angry local fighting with Pete (Justin’s towering six hitting a car weeks earlier), and many of the President’s XI getting to the ground late. Pacific skipper Atkin won the toss and elected to bat.

Hollman and Atkin opened the batting and got the innings started in a steady fashion. The bowler in form Alexander struggled to have the same impact as he had at Wray crescent a few weeks earlier but kept the batsman honest. Atkin lost his head after a six over mid-wicket and was bowled. Hollman soon departed in different circumstances as he retired to chase a parking inspector who was about to distribute a ticket. Hollman won that battle, just. Hollman’s retirement brought the dangerous Roy to the crease at the same time as middle-order lynchpin Webley. Roy soon departed after Sohail shattered some more stumps in an impressive display. Tempany arrived to the crease and played his natural game which included hitting the bowling around as per usual, but on this day failed to kick on.

Hollman returned to the crease to partner Webley in a crucial middle order stand. Hollman provided support to Webley who controlled the innings with an intelligent batting display, mixing aggression and controlled batting. After a critical partnership Hollman and Webley both departed to McKillop in an attempt to lift the run rate. Davies came to the crease and kept the momentum going with some fine shots, with support from Bennett. Sohail bowled Bennett and then had Davies caught in the deep by the home captain Atkin, who was filling in for the President’s XI after Sarfraz unfortunately dislocated his shoulder. Faisal came to the crease and kept the runs coming with some boundaries and a six. Sohail claimed Fuller to cap an impressive display of bowling with 5 wickets. Smith and Faisal kept the runs coming in an amusing partnership which involved runs and comical running between the wickets as both batsmen argued over which runs to take. The innings closed as Faisal was lazily run out by a direct hit from the boundary from substitute fielder Atkin, who didn’t enjoy catching and running his own men out. All in all a very good total of 226 was on the board thanks primarily to Webley’s and Hollman’s 43.

The President’s XI got off to a great start with Allum opening and taking on the bowling. Jon Brown was the unlucky bowler of the day after opening the bowling impressively, but having the usually reliable hands of Atkin and Roy dropping the dangerous Vanderpump both in the same over. Lucius also opened the bowling impressively and dismissed both openers Vanderpump and Allum to get some momentum back for the Pacific XI. Brown finally had some luck when he demonstrated that sometimes you just have to do the job yourself, when he had McKillop caught and bowled. The game was then balanced as the President’s XI were 3-66 after a brisk start.

The momentum of the game then swung towards the President’s XI after the man only known as ‘PK’ came to the crease and started impressively in a classy innings. The unlucky Vincent came to the crease and departed soon after being run out painfully without facing a ball, which brought skipper Lahrie to the crease. PK and Lahrie then combined in a dominant partnership which shocked Pacific and generally turned the fielding side into a rabble for a period of time. Atkin was hit out of the attack by his opposite number from a series of hefty leg side blows, and then if things could not get worse Atkin suffered a more pain by dropping Lahrie from a high catch.

After great knocks of 50 and 43 respectively and just when it seemed the President’s XI had broken Pacific, PK and Lahrie departed thanks to the bowling of the consistently angry and impressive Smith. Ramji came to the crease and tried desperately to control the lower order and keep the President’s XI in the game, but when Atkin came back to claim two wickets and Fuller one, Pacific has seemingly ended the game. With Sarfaz absent injured the President’s XI were one batter short, and someone then had the insane idea (possibly Webley) to give Sohail the opportunity to claim ‘last man’s tucker’, meaning he could bat the innings out without a partner and only with a runner. What followed shocked all, as Sohail hit two massive sixes and gave the home team the fright of the day before Pacific turned the tide of recent seasons to claim a narrow win.

An exciting close game played fittingly in dry warm conditions that we have come to expect in mid October. More of the same next year. Captain of the Presidents XI said "I had a great day out. I hope everyone enjoyed the day and I thank you all for your participation." Lahri Mohamed

Home captain Atkin added “Thanks to all as it was a great, entertaining day of cricket played in the right spirit, but next time someone suggests last man’s tucker I’ll give them a quiet word or two!”
