Wrayny Days and Lockdowns Always Get Me Down
Pacific v President's XI at Wray Crescent
Sat 31 Oct 2020 at 10am
Abandoned
Friendly fixture

It's All Hallows' Eve, a night of unwelcome surprises. None are likely to prove more unwelcome that the much delayed arrival on our television screens of part-time prime minister and full time Honey Monster Boris Johnson, to return the UK to a national lockdown and bring the cricket season to a (somehow) premature end.

In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of the British weather, which had brought an end to festivities at Wray some seven hours earlier, 19.4 overs into a game that had been building nicely. With a combination of bad luck and a lack of people desperate to play when the forecast was this bad, the incumbent President Mutz Siddiqui was short of a few players on the day and promptly recruited his brother from the Pacific side and Shailene, who was promised a bowl at Jas which sadly never materialised.

In the play that was available, seamers Gane and McGinnigle bowled exceptionally tidily, with the former also picking up two wickets, whilst Pacific captain Garrett also grabbed a brace including a second ball lbw of Riz Siddiqui. The dangerman didn't look delighted to be given out, but as Korgy's finger was in the air faster than Garrett could even get an appeal out, there can't have been a great deal of doubt in his mind.

The end came when the rain, which had previously been oscillating between light and heavy bursts, decided to set in properly and send us running for the relative safety of the pavilion overhang (most of us) or lying down inside the tardis (me).

And so ended a 2020 season which started in mid-July and ended on Halloween. A season like no other before it, and, hopefully, after it. We may have been slow to get started, not have won a great deal and, worst of all, not been able to have teas, but it was bloody brilliant to have got as much cricket in as we did and I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that it's been something to look forward to in a year without much else positive in it. Thanks to all who played, organised, scored, umpired, sub-fielded or just spammed up the WhatsApp group: see you in 2021.

Rainy days in the UK, poorly cropped in tribute to our leaders
