Pacific sink Poole as JazBall is born

What is JazBall you may ask? Is it just a s*** version of Bazball for village cricket? “JazBall” explains Mark Mehta, “is a way of life, is yet to be defined, but yet has so much potential for Pacific culture”*

It was within this ethos that on a glorious second day of the tour, the Pacific travelling pack went to Poole for the final leg of their 2022 tour. Captain Jas Bas won the toss and elected to bowl, quietly confident of the depth of batting and bowling in his line up. Sam Howes and Phil Smith, both continuing good form from their previous game, faced resistance from the openers. Howes got the breakthrough, courtesy of a dolly at point caught by PCC legend Tom Ireland.

Jas Bas decided to mix the bowling up and followed with the medium pace duo of Tom Ireland and Moses, claiming 3 crucial wickets on what truly was a road. However Poole’s opener Boyd continued his aggressive approach, prompting Jas to bring on local star Brett Custard. And Custard delivered, in typical fashion of good length, variable bowling to claim figures of 25-2 off 7 overs. Mohan claimed a wicket at the death but in the heat it was hard going, with Poole posting 243, not too bad going on what was a batter’s paradise.

Basi, installing an unorthodox batting line up, sent Woodland and Moses out to bat. After a bright start, both fell in quick succession, followed by Tom Ireland, to bring Joe Deighan and Mohan at the crease. A solid 80 run partnership followed with some great display of attacking and poaching shots on offer from Deighan (31) and Mohan. Deighan was caught to bring captain Basi to the crease.

After an solid start, Basi was deceived by a pee roller, continuing his poor form for the season. This was followed by Mohan, out for an excellent 70 in typical attacking display on show throughout the tour leaving an average of something like 60 odd. Following the wickets of Mutz (7) and a terrific catch to remove Eppy (3) at point, Pacific looked on the verge of defeat.

But after all, this was JazBall. A new unorthodox brand of cricket yet to be defined entering Pacific folklore. And in this fashion, Poole were unaware that the mighty duo of Brett Custard and Mark Mehta were to enter the crease. A solid 50 odd run partnership was built, from simple yet effective foundations. Mark playing some textbook drives around the park, Custard keeping the run rate ticking off. At 238 with a few overs to go, could this be it? And yet there was another twist in the tale. Custard was removed for LBW for a crucial 15. This brought a nervy Sam Howes to the crease, who held his own under intense pressure from the opposition. After some blocking from Mark, Howes hit a winning run courtesy of a dropped catch.

Drama, yes, Controversy, yes. But hard work, passion and team ethos prevailed. In Poole, JazBall was born, long may it continue…
