All's well that starts in Wells
Pacific v Dorset Wanderers at Wells Cathedral School

Tour fixture

Those of us not sensible enough to have come down the night before arrived at the beautiful Wells Cathedral School cricket ground hot and sweaty, after a very early start, to be greeted by a pristine looking track.  Pacific won the toss and unsurprisingly opted to bat, with MarkM and JasBas opening up.  JasBas was out early to a Webley combo (not the last Webley combo to trouble us on the day), and MarkW perished soon after.  JD came to the crease and, together with MarkM, began to take advantage of the flat track and quick outfield.  JD was particularly severe on the spin of Tomlinson as he moved through the gears, sweeping and pulling effectively in typically busy fashion.  The pair put on 100 in quick time before MarkM departed for 48.

Mohan was in next and was positive from the start as we looked to accelerate.  JD fell for an excellent 92, bringing Sam to the crease, promoted up to number 6.  Sam batted nicely for his 24 and Mohan reached an assured half-century before being run out in the final over.

Pacific's total of 250 was a bit light but not indefensible.  There followed the first of 2 champagne moments of the day: tea!  Pork pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and cakes, and tea, actual tea - almost enough to make Pacificos wish they'd fielded first.

Sam and JoeD opened the bowling, Sam getting some nice movement away and JoeD claiming the wicket of opener Weld, caught by the diving Korgy in the covers.  Unfortunately this wicket brought Tom Webley to the crease, a classy left-handed bat who marmalised anything wayward, fare which was provided generously by the twin chinamen Korgy and Eppy.  One 6 off the expensive Epstein landed somewhere near Glastonbury.

Erstwhile Pacifico Jon Webley entered to join his brother after opener Tomlinson wilted in the heat, but was initially unable to cut loose in his usual fashion, due to a superb spell of bowling by Phil.  Mohan also helped to apply the brakes, but Phil's spell really was exceptional.  His tight control of line and length restricted both Webleys and got Pacific back into the game, with 100 required off the final 13 overs after the last drinks break.

There followed the 2nd champagne moment of the day, also involving Phil.  Tom Webley skied one to long-on, where JoeD called for it, steadied himself, and proceeded to drop the ball (/palm it off) into the hands of the waiting Phil, who had somehow anticipated this and moved around from deep mid-wicket.

Unfortunately, by this point the damage had been done, and Wanderers were able to canter to victory in the penultimate over (though special mention to JasBas for an excellent over of googlies which got him a deserved wicket).

Both teams decamped to a very pleasant pub (with a very grumpy waitress) in the lovely Wells city centre, and some Pacificos pushed on the the Wetherspoons with the thirsty oppo.  All in all, a very enjoyable first day of tour, played in excellent spirit on a beautiful ground.  Special thanks to the organisers, especially the unfortunately injured BennyB, and to the drivers, Mutz, JoeD and Creatures, who had to put in a serious stint over the weekend.
