Pacific's first VPCCL win of the season was secured by a margin of five wickets, thanks to major contributions from muscular Welsh debutant Rob Birch (51*) and the somewhat contrastingly sized John Deighan (41*). Their little and large partnership took us to within sight of victory after the early loss of Paul Rajkumar, and victory was eventually secured by a single scampered off a wide delivery with the best part of four overs to spare.
Pacific's team was somewhat unusual in featuring at least five, possibly even six wicketkeepers in our eight, as well as at least two players who were nursing injuries and couldn't bowl, meaning that being asked to field first was a significant challenge for stand-in skipper Mutz. His job complicated further when he dropped a tough chance off his own bowling and then added injury to insult by falling on the ball and bruising his backside. SI made the most of the large open spaces of pitch 3 and some somewhat occasional bowling from all comers to score 134, but it never looked like enough after Birch got going.
