Eight balls and three wickets to honour Nuggsy
Pacific v Old Citizens at Wray Crescent
Sat 12 Oct 2019 at 11.30am
Drawn
James Gleadow Memorial

The club captain had planned to give the following speech before things got too soggy:

Hello everyone and thanks for coming to Wray Crescent where James played and watched so many games of cricket.

Thanks of course to Ruth and Tim for their help in making this game a special one. And it's great to see so many people who were close to James making an extra effort to attend today's match despite it being mid-October. I think Nuggsy would approve as he could often be seen here wrapped up against the cold.

It's almost exactly two years since James played his final match at Wray, on 14th October 2017. As Pete has pointed out, it was typical of James that as Highgate Taverners were a man short he got a chance to play against his Pacific teammates, which he loved just as much as playing with us, because for him it was about evening up the sides.

And our chairman Oli Haill recalls how, twelve years earlier, in 2005, James put on a 10th wicket partnership of 109 here with Jon Webley to chase down North Midd's 229. I'd imagine that he was the Jack Leach to Webley's Ben Stokes as he finished on 16 not out, but it was obviously a vital innings nonetheless.

Later on, when he could no longer play, James would often pop by to find comfort in cricket. So thanks to everyone for coming and let's hope we can put on good show for Nuggsy as I'm sure he's watching from on high.

As it was we managed only eight balls in the rain before retreating to the pub.
