Greeners puts retirement on hold
Pacific v Hackney Grasshoppers at Queens College
Sun 02 Jul 2000
Won by 113 runs
Friendly fixture

In this markedly good humoured fixture, 2 London sides found themselves travelling up the A40 for an all day game at one of Oxford's more secluded venues.

HG: 126 ao. S Tennant 40. P Hollman 11-3-24-4

Greeners

In keeping with the sedate nature of the match, John Green & Ian Lay were able to post 139 for the 1st wicket as HG toiled in the humid oppressive conditions. Left hander, Greeners, who had earlier in the season talked of retirement made the most of nominated openers Hollman & Duthie's absence. The former having gone to get petrol to help out the latter broken down outside Oxford.

This was John's 1st century since his score of 126* on debut v Crossbats on 2/5/87 having had a little over 100 innings between the 100s - hopefully, retirement will now be firmly replaced onto the backburner. Ian Lay too was able to celebrate his maiden half century by forcing the ball through the gaps & setting up P's total. Seb Tennant was the pick of the bowlers who were missing the extra pace of Matt Sanderson & the batting of Dougal DeKeller - both out injured.

HG's batting did look a little brittle but having succumded to breakthroughs to both quicks - Lucius Faisal & Matt Ralph from St Lucia & Australia respectively, Hollman continued the inroads with a mixture of medium inswing & leg breaks to undermine HG's middle order before Matt Patel was able to claim the winning wicket with still 19 overs remaining. Captain Steve Lay was clearly pleased despite another lbw & now takes a 1 month break to rest a troublesome knee.

P: J Green, I Lay+, L Faisal, S Lay*, A Duthie, H Patel, M Ralph, A Godwin, P Hollman, (C O'Grady), (A Barrow).
