Finally, Pacific met Northfields on the field of play. 5 previous attempts failing due to the weather & football world cups were set aside, but with 5 players cruising for parking for an hour, the game starting was delayed until 2pm & so was reduced to 35 overs.
Some early inroads by the visitors opening bowlers saw Toby joined by Hussain Nasseem at 54-2. One time Pacific player Nick Frankes must have wondered what was happening when his 3 balls went for 4 - 1 - 4 & which brought milestones for both Toby & Hussain for their 50s & a 100 run partnership. When Toby was caught by Dave Redhead when on 77 & the score was 176-4. Hussain tried to get the 25 runs he needed for his century from the final 3 overs but failed to get enough strike as Tom Ireland also joined in the runs. A great partnership & a good team total.
In reply, Pacific certainly had their chances & with several dropped catches, David capitalised fully carrying his bat for an unbeaten 119. Alex King & Nick Hall bowled well but Tom Ireland was the unluckiest & really impressed with his left arm swing & bounce. Gary Durston then chipped away & sent 4 men back while young Owen Davies put the right catchers in the right places (& saw only one catch dropped at deep mid wicket) before wrapping it up with another catch at deep midwicket agianst the spin with 8 balls remaining & 41 runs shy of the target.
A really enjoyable game despite the drops & Toby's eye & the late start. The new players all impressed & there was great spirit & the oppo contributed hugely. Even the tea was top marks despite the absence of hot dricks & squash
