Booneart picks up the pace
Pacific v Edmonton at Away
Sun 22 Jul 2001 at 2pm
Friendly fixture

P entered the game confident that the side on paper would give the Middx league side a truly competitive match, but 2 no-shows put paid to that.

E 191-9 dec. D Hinnegan 86. M Boonaert 12-5-35-5
P 107-7. P Hollman 34. Mardell 5-0-5-2

Despite the quality of the 9, the gaps were too large to fill & up to 30 runs could have been saved thereby putting P in a strong position on an excellent batting pitch.

A couple of drops did little for morale but the quality of the bowling spearheaded by quick Marcel Boonaert - who picked up his 3rd consecutive fivefor, kept heads from dropping. Despite the drops, Pacific fielded very well as a further 5 catches were taken - 2 by Matthew Ralph. Left hand opener Hinnegan capitalised from his drop while on 8 at 2nd slip by Steve Lay off Mike Alexander to make 83 but still a gettable chase despite P starting at 0-2 effectively. Steve Lay (0) out 4th ball & Matt Ralph run out for 2 left P at 8-2. E did what they could to entice a chase & Peter Hollman (34 off 104 balls) batted gainfully but circumspectly following the loss of all the P batting match winners.

In fact it sometimes seemed that any positive aggressive shot was immediately punished with dismissal. Tim Mileham (18) bowled off stump, Marcel Boonaert (5) & Jim Davies (18) both caught mid on / long on & Mike Alexander(1) lbw sweeping. 1 final incident on the last ball saw Nigel Wilkinson dismissed lbw to Cook with only Ian Noble to come.

"It was a dull draw, a real shame to go there with 9 & my batting must have bored for England. Time now to look forward then to next weeks game against Lord Gnome with confidence looking at the strength in depth of the team on paper. That & the 2nd last evening match with the 100% record to maintain."

Pacific: S Lay, M Ralph, T Mileham+, P Hollman, J Davies, M Boonaert, M Alexander, N Wilkinson*, I Noble (A Duthie), (N Fox).
