Pacific almost pulled off a remarkable victory at Wray Crescent on Saturday.
Pacific 223-5, DeKeller 58 no, Davies 50 no, Holliday 33
Tower Ravens 86-9, Iain Spencer-Baird 4-17
Put into bat by 8-a-side rivals Tower Ravens, Matt Holliday got them off to a
good start with an accomplished 33 despite Paul Attwood retiring hurt after
being hit by a short pitched all (thankfully with no serious damage).
However wickets fell at regular intervals, including a remarkable runner
when Dave Murray and Pete Czabotar collided in the middle of the pitch,
leaving Murray on his backside, and run out before he had got to his feet.
After this comic turn (though Murray failed to see the funny side), Jim
Davies and Dougal DeKeller put of an unbeaten century stand to raise Pacific
up to parity. The slow over rate by Tower Ravens (39 in three hours) meant
that Pacific's declaration came after 5pm. On the batsman friendly pitch an
early declaration against a strong Ravens batting line up would have seemed
foolhardy, though with hindsight may have produced a result.
Raven never looked like successfully chasing the Pacific target and lost
wickets regularly. Darryl Roberts and Lucius Faisal both bowled well,
returning figures of 2 for 14 and 2 for 21 respectively. However, Pacific's
progress seemed too slow. With one over left, three wickets remained, leg
spinner Ian Spenser-Baird had the ball. Two balls in and a wild swipe
brought one wicket through Paul Attwood's second smart stumping. Three
balls later a close catch by Murray made it interesting. So one wicket left,
one ball to bowl. The Tower man played a straight bat and the came ended in
an exciting draw. A couple more overs may have made the difference, but
then, as they say, that's cricket!
Dave Murray said after the match, "It was another terrific match. DeKeller
and Davies produced the goods again, and Ian was a revelation with his spin.
Unfortunately, he will be facing us next week when we take on Gracies, so
hopefully this sighter will help otherwise he could be a real handful."
