Pacific hold on for draw
Pacific v Hackney Grasshoppers at Away
Sun 13 May 2001 at 2pm
Drawn
Friendly fixture

Grasshoppers got the closest to beating Pacific having previously lost 4 & drawn 1 of the 5 encounters as Pacific's last pair of John Baglivi & Mike Alexander hung on for a draw for 30 balls.

HG 206-9 dec. Dougall DeKeller 53. Lee Berry 47. Peter Hollman 8-0-48-3
P 148-9. Tim Mileham 43. Peter Hollman 25. Lee Berry 11-1-58-3

Earlier HG scored the biggest total against P having been inserted, as the bowlers toiled on a featherbed pitch with the ball sitting up to be hit on anything short. Mike Alexander impressed again, but Captain Steve Lay was forced to reduce the spells due to the unusual energy sapping conditions. Dougall DeKeller (53) & Lee Berry (47) capitalised from the change bowlers putting together a partnership of 107 for the 4th wicket before a late flurry of wickets as the declaration loomed.

In reply, Grasshoppers had Pacific at 15-2 having lost the dangerous Shayne Rees for 0. Maybe HG could have attacked more but opening seamer, Seb Tennant remained a threat as he extracted lateral movement both ways. Pacific led by Steve Lay batted cautiously as the target rate climbed.

Following the loss of Lay (8) & Jake Shakland (12), Tim Mileham (43) & Jim Davies (6) looked to be P's best chance, but with the latter falling to Berry with a high full toss, caught by Jonny Down at midwicket, hopes seemed dashed. A partnership of 44 for the 7th wicket between Hollman (25) & Mileham (43) promised some hope, but once the former was out, having already been dropped twice, the required rate increased further from 6.5 to 9 until the last pair came together & sought the sanctuary of a draw despite the odd half scare.

Pacific: Shayne Rees, Patrick McGuiness, Steve Lay*, Jake Shakland, Matt Patel, Tim Mileham, Jim Davies, Peter Hollman, Frank Baglivi+, John Baglivi, Mike Alexander
