Cambridge college Gonville & Caius was founded in 1348 by Edmund Gonville, Rector of Terrington, then re-founded in the sixteenth century by John Keys (who Latinized his name from Keys to Caius, after moving to Italy).

Pacific Cricket Club was founded 635 years later by Peter Hollman, sales executive of Kentish Town, as a works team for the now-defunct music distribution company Pacific Records.

Hollman is still going strong (well, he's alive) but wasn't playing in this game. It is not known whether either Gonville or Caius were too hungover to play on Saturday or were unavailable for another reason. Students, eh?

In tribute to Caius's most eminent Fellow, the theoretical physicist and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics Stephen Hawking, Pacific's opening bowlers seemed to be affected by the strong gravitational pull of a leg-side black hole. Both Alex McKillop and Oli Haill finding the Euclidean path over the topologically peculiar bump at either end of the wicket and the massive swing in the air a tad difficult to manage.

However after an unhealthy dose of wides, long-hops and short-hops from both left-armers, Haill finally swung one in beautifully between bat and pad to remove the opposing captain. Not long after, first change Webley got a Cambridge Blue to play on for a duck then Haill softened up another of Caius's callow batsmen with a beamer, shortly followed by a yorker that was only dug out to midwicket, where lanky newcomer Tim Vanderpump took a superb low catch.

Caius students, it says, are characterised by "a spirit of endeavour and excellence which are as relevant today as when the College was first founded nearly 700 years ago" and their number two endeavoured to made an excellent 70 before being removed by the unwavering line and length of John Brown. Another newcomer, Tottenham boy Moses Hutchinson-Pascal, led Pacific further toward the promised land with his first wicket for the club and Liverpool fan Matt Callender effected a rapacious run-out, before Aussie Chris Atkin's diet of low-carb, lower-order batsmen was quickly and effectively put away.

Tea arrived and Caius declared at 192-9.

As the drizzle continued to fall, Pacific opening bats Vanderpump and McKillop kept the drops out of their eyes and the lively Caius bowlers at bay only for a short while. After captain Steve Lay and Webley began to lay down a more solid foundation and the latter began to swing his hearty blade, a concerned groundsman was forced to call it all off before his beautiful pitch was damaged any further. 59 for 2 at close.
