Some cricket matches are remembered for stunning centuries, unplayable spells and dramatic finishes.

This one will be remembered because 22 players nearly lost a game to a bag of fertiliser.

Pacific CC arrived at Highgate Cricket & Tennis Club ready for a 1pm start. The teams watched a junior game conclude bang on schedule and began making their way to inspect the wicket for the afternoon's fixture.

There was just one small issue.

There wasn't one.

When players approached the groundsman to ask which strip had been prepared, he delivered the news nobody wanted to hear: as far as he knew, the game had been cancelled. The square was being fertilised and watered for the following week and nobody was playing cricket that day.

What followed was a desperate attempt at diplomacy from both sides.

Players pleaded.

Captains negotiated.

Various solutions were suggested.

The groundsman remained unmoved as a donkey wearing concrete shoes "

No pitch. No game.

With frustration and panic setting in, someone remembered Springfield Park. While not Pacific's main home ground, it has become something of a second home over the years and has hosted many Pacific fixtures when needed. A quick check suggested it might be available, and suddenly both teams were loading into cars, Ubers and whatever transport they could find for an emergency relocation across London.

Meanwhile, Saad and company made a crucial detour to Tim's house to rescue the essentials: stumps, a scoreboard and boundary flags. Without them, the game would have looked more like a picnic than a cricket match.

Against all odds, both teams arrived at Springfield Park, agreed to reduce the fixture to 30 overs per side, and got underway shortly after 2pm.

Cricket had been saved.

Pacific CC Innings – 192

After all the drama, Pacific's response was to get on with the cricket.

The innings was built around an excellent captain's knock from Daniel Humphrey, who anchored the innings with a well-made 50.

Dan was well supported by Zafar Ali, whose fluent 34 at number two helped lay the foundations for the innings, and Zahid Ali (Zee), whose 14 provided important support in the middle order.

One of the unluckiest moments of the innings belonged to Zafar, who looked in particularly good touch and appeared set for a much bigger score before a mix-up led to an unfortunate run out. Having looked completely in control, his innings ended against the run of play, leaving teammates wondering what might have been.

Behind the stumps and on the scoreboard, Murtiza Siddiqui (Mutz) played an important role. His tidy wicketkeeping and useful contribution of 12 runs helped keep the innings moving when Pacific needed partnerships.

Towards the latter stages of the innings, Michael's 35 gave Pacific valuable impetus, helping the side post what looked a competitive 192.

A special mention must also go to Yusuf, Pacific's 16-year-old youngster. Arriving at the crease at number 11 with just one ball remaining, teammates expected a wild agricultural swipe in search of a few bonus runs. Instead, Yusuf displayed the temperament of a night-watchman trying to survive until stumps. seasoned Test opener, presenting the full face of the bat in a perfectly executed defensive stroke. It was technically immaculate. Whether it was tactically advisable with one ball left in the innings is still being debated in the Pacific dressing room.

Chesham Arms Chase – 195-5

Pacific made the perfect start when Yusuf trapped Felix LBW for 4, reducing Chesham Arms to 7-1.

However, Tom (59) and Lewis (53) steadied the innings and gradually shifted the momentum back towards Chesham Arms with an excellent partnership.

Pacific refused to go away. The bowlers continued to battle and repeatedly found ways to keep the game alive.

The pick of the attack was Zafar Ali, who responded brilliantly to the disappointment of his earlier run out. Not content with feeling sorry for himself, he returned with the ball and produced one of Pacific's most controlled spells, conceding just 23 runs from his 3 overs while taking a crucial wicket.

Saad led the wicket-taking effort with 2-36, while Michael and Yusuf picked up a wicket each.

Although wickets eluded him, Harry Poil deserves plenty of credit. His three overs cost just 13 runs, creating pressure at a stage when Chesham Arms were looking to accelerate. It was a spell that deserved more reward than the scorebook ultimately gave him.

One of the highlights of the afternoon came in the field when skipper Daniel Humphrey produced a superb catch at cow corner, safely holding onto a chance that looked destined for the boundary.

Despite Pacific's efforts, Chesham Arms held their nerve and reached the target in the final over, finishing on 195-5 to secure a thrilling five-wicket victory.

A Final Mention

A final mention should go to Rizwan Siddiqui (Riz), Pacific's regular captain, who was unavailable for the match for perhaps the best possible reason. Riz sacrificed his Sunday cricket to support a group of 12 child war refugees who have recently arrived in the UK for treatment and assistance. While Pacific narrowly missed having their skipper on the field, everyone associated with the club would agree his time was spent on a far more important cause.

Result

Chesham Arms CC won by 5 wickets, reaching 195-5 in the final over.

In the end, Pacific may have come up just short on the scoreboard, but after starting the afternoon with no pitch, no venue and what appeared to be no game at all, simply getting 60 overs of cricket completed felt like a minor miracle.

A match that began with confusion, panic and a cross-London convoy somehow ended with a last-over thriller—which, when you think about it, is probably exactly how Sunday cricket is supposed to be. ???
