Massacre Avenged
Pacific v Hoddesdon at Hoddesdon CC
Sun 24 Apr 2022 at 1pm
Won 93 runs
Friendly fixture

On a sunny Sunday afternoon the Pacific team turned up at Hoddesden - scene of the infamous Hoddesden masacre - ready to set things right and hoping to face a weaker side than they had faced on that previous occasion.

Things didn't start well. Pacific lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a green pitch. Mutz and Mark opened the batting, the latter not being troubled by the pitch - bowled inside edging a full toss on to the stumps. Mutz could only watch stoically from the other end as a flurry of wickets fell playing loose shots to some tidy bowling from the Hoddesdon youth. Suddenly Pacific were 5-43 and in danger of failing to set a total that would challenge a Hoddesdon side full of energetic youth but lacking experience.

Thankfully we still had a one man army at our disposal in the form of Ramiz "Rambo" Khan. Ably supported first by Noor and then by Nick, Ramiz went about assembling a mature watchful maiden Pacific century before cutting loose in the final few overs hitting a huge six over the longest part of the boundary. Thanks to their efforts Pacific managed to set an imposing total of 239.

After the interval we set about our defense of the target. Noor and Joe opened the bowling with Noor bowling a hostile left arm over spell and prising out what may have been the key wicket of the opposition skipper, bowling four overs for just three runs. Meanwhile Joe at the other end was bowling tidily but with no reward for his efforts.

The initial bowling changes brought on Ahmed and Mohan, the first of five different varieties of spin that Pacific would display. Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. His leg spin with occasional googly variations proving to difficult to pick for a young Hoddesdon batting line up as well as one of their senior batsmen. Mohan bowled miserly from the other end, preventing Hoddesdon from ever really being in with a shout of chasing down the total.

Zee came on to bowl his variety of spin bowling, no one really having any idea what he was about to bowl. Nick bowled his left arm wrist spin sending one thundering into the pads of the batter, the umpire turning down the appeal claiming "you can't be out LBW if the ball pitches outside off" bringing a whole new (and far more challening for the bowlers) interpretation of the LBW law. The total now well beyond reach, Mark was allowed to bowl the 5th variety of spin, darting in some off breaks that didn't turn at all. Luke having failed with the bat in both matches managed to salvage his weekend with some sharp bowling and a well deserved wicket at the end of the match.

The young Hoddesdon opener batted well throughout most of the innings surpassing his previous best of 72 set the day before, but it wasn't enough to prevent Pacific from winning.

We stayed for a drink after the match before expressing our gratitude to our gracious hosts and thanked them for sparing us from their first XI.
