Wray in the blazing bank holiday sunshine. Praise the Lord!
Good Friday was a scorcher and there can be no argument that Jesus died for our sins so that Pacific could play cricket. Someone tell the revellers who had to begrudgingly give up their sunbathing spots on the outfield so that willow could once again strike layers of twine wound around a cork core inside a red leather shell. Cricket’s the only friend Wray needs.
Riz won the toss and fancied Pacific’s strong batting line up to post a competitive total. The Dulwich Lawnmower lads looked a spritely and youthful bunch in their warm up and their bowling in the early overs proved to be tidy and miserly. Tom, Sam and Jas all fell fairly early on so the TLG and Mutz came in with work to do. They stroked and slashed their ways to respectable scores before Maccy G provided some further bedrock in his time at the crease. The Lawnmower would’ve been pleased by their groundwork at this point but they couldn’t factor what happened next…
Riz + Rambo x Ramadan = RUNS
184 of them to be precise. No math’s teacher will have to check the working on that equation. The Pacific 8th wicket partnership record surpassed in the process. Riz unbeaten on 104 and Rambo on 78. Spectators were left scattering for cover as thunderous sixes rained down from a cloudless sky.
As always it would be remiss to forget the contribution of an omnipresent performer for Pacific over the years. Never too loud about their achievements but an inextinguishable force. Extras, thanks for the 82. We love you x
PCC came out of the innings break with a spring in their step and an exceedingly strong total of 328 to defend. Maccy G got to work early with three wickets including a fine flying take at point from the TLG. Harry provided steady support from the other end and once the opening bowlers were finished, the lawnmower was resembling a flymo that had just run over its own cord – 4 down with 46 on the board.
Sunny was relentless with the ball and like Tony Montana, chased his Michelle until he scored it with the last wicket (he got a five-fer). The Lawnmower was back in its shed after posting 138 on the long walk to Calvary. Like Pontius Pilate, PCC had shown no mercy and won the match by 190 runs. Will there be the resurrection of a Pacific vs Dulwich Lawnmower fixture next season? I’d put my money on Sunday 9th April 2023…
Tenuous Scarface and Easter references aside, it was a cracking day for cricket, Dulwich Lawnmower were great opposition and as always, cricket was the real winner at Wray.
