A strong Vic Park campaign ends in honourable defeat
Pacific v I Don’t Like Cricket Club at Victoria Park Pitch 2
Wed 25 Aug 2021 at 5.45pm
Lost by 3 wickets
Victoria Park Community Cricket League fixture

We lost the toss and were inserted by the amusingly named I Don’t Like Cricket Club. Mutz Siddiqui (21) and Toby Chasseaud (50 retired) got us off to a decent start and good contributions were also made by Kaleem Luthra (25), John Deighan (16) and Navjyot Devesher (27 not out). Rizwan Siddiqui (1) was, like his brother, bowled by the searing pace of Al Collins. We finished on 152 from our 16 overs, which was a decent score given the long grass in the outfield.

Max Mortiboys (one wicket) and Harry Rix then opened the bowling for us. Nav took a good high catch at deep point to dismiss Leon Rodgrigues, thus proving that he doesn't only take them off his own bowling. Unfortunately Toby dropped one running in from long off. Though not an easy chance, it was to prove costly as the remaining opener, Liam Dunnell, and No 3 Ross Legg hit out, both relishing the pace on the ball to unleash a succession of sixes and retire on 50 each. Our change bowlers, Riz (two wickets) and Nav (one wicket), did a decent containing job but the damage had already been done and IDLCC were able to surpass our total with an over too spare, though we did get them five wickets down with a combination of good bowling and fielding (including a nice run out by Kaleem despite almost losing his footing) after the change of ends.

Still, we had a good midweek season, finishing third in Division 3 in the Victoria Park Community Cricket League, in what must be our best finish in a fair few years.

Midweek manager Aroon Korgoankar, who has done sterling work throughout the season and umpired pretty much every innings we have batted at Vic Park, said after the match: “I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has represented us this season at Viccy Park. All of you played your part in an enjoyable season. I hope to see some of you in weekend matches over the next month or so but take care and thanks for making it fun.”

(But it was Nav, not Max, who caught Rodrigues. And it was Kaleem who threw the ball that resulted in the run out that was credited to Mutz)
