The rain never came
Pacific v Millwall Stars CC at Wray Crescent
Sat 28 Aug 2021 at 1pm
Lost by 7 wickets
Friendly fixture

Pacific selected an XI of potential and promise including five debutants in Budda, Cox (of Camel CC fame), Saeed, Sunbal and Kumar showing that a combination of East Ham and WhatsApp continued to prove fruitful for recruitment purposes. The bowlers in particular arrived relishing the challenge of negotiating Wray’s emerald green wicket.

Garrett marshalled the troops well whilst simultaneously managing a challenging situation with his unwell child (who the author is pleased to report later made a full recovery), handing over the reins to Chasseaud later in the day when he had to depart.

Millwall won the toss and elected to bowl, with Budda and Chasseaud strolling out to open for Pacific. The duo applied complementary attacking and watchful styles to lay a foundation of 14 for the first wicket until Budda was caught trying to go over the top. That brought Basi to the crease, ably supported on the sidelines by fiancee Shaline – a cricket enthusiast. A further 40 was added for the second wicket until the wiley Venkat removed Basi by drawing him into a sweep shot a touch early. After Chasseaud picked out Bhaskar at deep midwicket off the bowling of K Rajesh for 26, John Deighan and Cox put on Pacific’s highest partnership of the day with 84, displaying some fine stroke play and strong hitting to the boundary and beyond. Both Deighan and Cox were unfortunate not to reach fifty, finishing on 48 and 41 respectively. Saeed added a useful 17 off 13 balls, though the rest of the batters troubled the scoreboard only a little. With the addition of 22 helpful extras Pacific set about defending a total of 198, a little shy of the psychological edge that further runs might have provided.

Nallajonnala opened the bowling for Pacific following last week’s inspired debut at Mayfield, though received no reward for his hard yards. Millwall, meanwhile, made a solid start whilst early wickets continued to elude Pacific on a pitch that improved as the day wore on. The Millwall openers Anil and Gopi made 100 before Saeed took the first of his (and Pacific’s) three wickets of the day, marking a fine debut and a probing spell. Kumar, similarly, toiled away and arguably deserved more than an economy of 5.8 from 8 overs. Cox and Nannabatthuni (Millwall loanee) came on towards the end to pose some different questions yet to no avail. Farnham had taken the gloves as stand-in keeper, managing to stop most (though not all) balls going for byes.

The sky bruised as the afternoon matured offering a promise of serious rain that never came, with the hosts left ruing a total that was a few runs short of requirement. In the end, Millwall crept over the line pretty quickly winning by 7 wickets with 13 overs to spare.
