Three Ringers To Rule Them All
Pacific v Oakfield Parkonians CC at Oakfield Playing Fields

Middlesex & Essex Invitation League

On Sunday Pacific travelled to Redbridge Sports Centre to play Oakfield Parkonians in a timed league match.

Pacific lost the toss and were were put into bat with Toby Chasseaud and Sam Farnham our opening pair. After a steady start, Farnham fell LBW for 7 and Kaleem Luthra joined Toby at the crease.

Shortly afterwards, Toby was served up a low full toss by the Parkonians’ opening bowler and responded with an ankle-shattering straight drive which unfortunately ended the young paceman’s afternoon.

Following a slight delay and on a wicket that didn’t offer an awful lot for the bowlers, Chasseaud and Luthra began to accumulate, putting on a partnership of around 160 runs.

Luthra fell for 71, bringing out Ben Burnham who helped pile on some useful late runs alongside Toby who had by then past his century. Captain Tim ushered them in at around the 40 over mark with the score at 224-2 and Chasseaud finishing on a classy 124*.

Pacific took to the field with a new look attack spearheaded by a trio of debutants in Sandeep, Ganesh and Mohan. They did not disappoint. Opening the bowling alongside Jahanghir, Sandeep bowled Parkonians’ opening batsman round his legs and soon dismissed their number 3 through the gate. In what was a terrific opening spell he was unlucky not to have taken more. First change bowler Ganesh then followed suit, removing the no.5 batsmen with a ball that took an outside edge and flew through to first slip’s grateful hands.

With Parkonians’ under pressure it was time for some spin. Mohan, our new left arm orthodox spinner, made the flat English wicket look like the Chennai dust bowls he learnt his trade on. He began ripping and turning the ball at varying speed, bamboozling batsmen time and again. Though a helmet-less Mutz didn’t enjoy keeping to him much, it was a delight to watch Mohan at work from first slip. He picked up 2 quick wickets and Oakfield were 6 down after 20 overs.

With few runs on the board and only 20 overs left in the day, the Parkonians went into survival mode. Mohan soon picked up another dismissal but Oakfield’s eigth wicket partnership then dug in and frustrated the visitors. With around 7 overs to go, Jahanghir finally broke the pairing with a darting LBW for his second wicket of the day. In the hope of cleaning up the opposition’s tail, Pacific piled on the pressure, crowding the batsmen as experienced spin twins Tim and Ahmed pressed for another breakthrough... but to no avail.

With one over to go and two wickets still required, Tim returned the ball to Mohan. With three balls remaining he bowled the no10. batsman with a snorter. Out came the No.11 who became the hero for the hosts, duly surviving the final two balls and securing the draw by the thinnest of margins.

And so it was almost... the three ringers to rule them all. Special thanks to Ben B for the headline inspiration and to Sandeep, Ganesh and Mohan for filling in! We hope to welcome you back soon.

With one or two more catches taken it could have been a Pacific win but it was nonetheless a strong all round performance capped by a jug courtesy of centurion Toby, who didn’t waste a second in reminding us that he had now passed Brian Lara in the all time Test scoring charts!
