Pacific won their first 8-a-side game of the season with two overs to spare in this shortened game (to allow for light). A strong bowling performance left Reuters with an uphill battle as Pacific picked off the singles.
Reuters 49 all out (12 Overs) Kieran 15, Cowling 12-3, Rademaker 6-1
Pacific 50 for 1 (10 Overs) DeKeller 27*
With traffic at a standstill in Hackney, both sides only had four at 6:30. The decision to shorten the game to 12 overs for the light made sense and by the start both sides had reached seven. Skipper Bastin won the toss and put Reuters into bat. With the opening attack of Cowling and Faisal finding a nagging line outside off stump and bowler-favouring long grass just off the pitch, the Reuters openers struggled to break the field. Pressure soon led to the fall of opener Andrew, clean bowled by a Cowling special for a duck. Faisal held down his end well with some at times fiery bowling late in his spell (13 for 0 off 3 overs), and was unlucky not to collect a wicket for his efforts.
In Cowling's next over, the other opener Lyle skied a ball to the safe hands of Rademaker at Mid-wicket. Having crossed, the Reuters number three proceeded to reenact the shot next ball with Rademaker accepting the catch comfortably once more. With a run out of the Reuters fourth batsman, Cowling (12 for 3 off 3 overs) and Faisal finished their spells with Reuters on the ropes.
Rademaker and late arriving Rees carried on where the openers had left off, with Rademaker (6 for 1 off 3 overs) in particular bowling a frugal line outside off. Reuters looked to rebuild, in particular Reuters number six, Kieran, scoring a nurdling 15. The Reuters number five, Atif, was unlucky to play on from a good ball by Rademaker. In the final over Rees (9 for 0 off 3 overs), having found a good line after some initial early season rustiness, allowed little room for the Reuters last pair to score. A Faisal fake at Mid-off induced the pair into a suicidal second on the last ball to conclude the innings with Reuters 49 all out.
The Pacific openers, DeKeller and Faisal, began the reply carefully, with the first over bowled to Faisal a maiden. The Reuters opening bowlers weren't giving much away, but the Pacific batsmen seemed to be able to keep the board ticking over without the need for any big hitting. This pattern continued until the eighth over, when Faisal was caught for 9.
By this stage, DeKeller was well set and began to make the most of the change bowlers' less controlled line. With Bastin providing willing running support and the Reuters fielders losing some concentration in the gloom, DeKeller (27*) picked off the last few with two overs to spare. With that, the team adjourned to a nearby drinking establishment to mull over the game. A comfortable win to get the season off to a good start.
