Pipped in Soggy Thriller
Pacific v Vallance Stepney at Victoria Park Pitch 1  Tue 03-Jul-2007 at 6.30pm
Lost 3 runs

Initial reports say a close an exciting game with Conrad needing a 6 to win off the last ball but only succeeding in getting a 3. A huge noble effort given that Pacific only had 6 to start in the field with Nick held up & Darryl AWOL - & fielding in the rain.

The ever-dependable Chandler lost the toss, and Shamon duly gave his team the first use of what is usually a pretty good batting track- concrete astro.

With Pacific two light in the field until Fuller arrived half-way through, life on the good ship Pacific proved rather tricky with the ball teasing around the field consistently in 1s and 2s. Allum opened up proceedings with some good line and length economy and Chandler did close to the opposite, although finished nicely with decent figures. Both bowlers proving unlucky to have gone wicketless with the air-borne ball regularly finding the gaps.

Fuller and Smith chipped in with a cheap wicket each, but the team effort was cut-short by some huge gaps in the field and good running between the wickets the valiant Vallance- Saiful registering a well-constructed 50. With the outfield sodden, boundaries proved hard to come by, and thus Vallance ended with a par 139-3 that seemed well within Pacific’s reach if they could hit the rope on the occasion…

Purcell and Allum opened the chase up with some solid stroke-play and lusty blows off some good line and length from Jaed and Rea, but the run-rate soon escalated on Allum and Webley’s exit. Thus things were in the hands of the rest, and with Chandler and Purcell putting on a good partnership, a win looked within reach. Purcell tickling the ball around and Chandler axe-murdering anything near, proceedings took a blow when Purcell was well-caught in the covers.

Fuller came to the wicket and to the team’s rescue with a good rotation of the strike, and Chandler reigned down a few 4s and a straight 6 off the delicious pies of Shamon. However, with 21 needed off 12 balls and then a 6 off the last ball what the doctor needed… Chandler could not deliver, but only manage a 3 to leave a tight game handed over to Vallance. Shame!

Champagne moment goes to Emmins’ sharp stumping off Smith…

VIII :-Conrad Chandler*, Sammy Purcell, Darryl Roberts, Rob Allum, Steve Emmins, Nick Fuller, Simon Smith, & Jon Webley Reserves:- Peter Hollman, & Ben Gibson.

In Division 2. Pitch 2 versus 3rd in the green conference.
