Came. Saw. Were conquered.
Pacific v Caledonian Conquerors at Victoria Park Pitch 1  Wed 30-May-2007 at 6.30pm
Lost 60 runs

pitch 3 VIII:- Jon Webley, Sammy Purcell, Ben Gibson, Aroon Korgoankar, Darryl Roberts, Shayne Rees*, Rob Allum (tbc) & Simon Smith.

It began as a game of pleasant suprises. A full team, despite a few cancellations. Everyone arriving on time. No rain. A dry pitch. Promise of enough light to the game. Losing the toss was ominous though - the game quickly turned bad (for Pacific) and recovery never really looked likely.

Caledonian's opening pair signalled their intention to go for it from the off with some big hitting. Our normally economical opening bowling attack was punished. Three dropped catches didn't help our spinners' averages either - so spare a thought for Aroon Korgoankar and Sammy Purcell. Unfortunately no one took a wicket. The only departures were retiring Caledonian batsmen. In our defence it was windy - turning boundary catches (or potential drops) into sixes. In the end, we had a healthy total of 172 to chase.

Having to find nearly 11 runs an over from the start, Webley and Gibson bravely tried to take on Caledonian's opening pair. However the timing didn't seem there and much needed boundaries weren't forthcoming. Things looked desperate as Gibson was given LBW on an extremely bouncy pitch. And they were. Webley and Allum kept trying and earned an excellent work out with plenty of two's and even a few three's. But the odds for avoiding defeat were following the setting sun, Webley narrowly missed the chance for a 50-induced retirement as he was stumped having missed a slow ball when halfway down the pitch. Allum followed soon after - falling victim to a direct hit run out. Purcell use the few remaining overs to boost his average with another 19 runs (4 x 4's in one over). And that was that.

Not our finest hour. Lets do better next week.
