Bat Swapping Prevents Result
Pacific v New Boys at Victoria Park Pitch 1  Tue 15-May-2007 at 6.15pm
Abandoned With 2 overs remaining.

It almost ended in tears but it didn’t thankfully due to Shayne’s NATO peacekeeping skills. Conrad having all the peacekeeping skills of one of the West Side Boyz.

It began with the lack of our French newspaper due to map problems and 15 mins late with a 15 overs-reduced match. Losing the toss and batting first, Pacific galloped and caressed their way to 50 before Purcell brought his season average to 64 and in came Conrad ‘very nervous early starter’ Chandler. Webley and Chandler found the swing of Mohosin a little tricky, but the New Boys’ bowlers soon got their averages up and were being tickled and smashed round the park.

Webley soon departed to a round the wicket delivery through the gate from Romel (no relation to WWII character btw), and Chandler soon found his feet to hook and drive his way to 36* with some notable gasping after quick singles. A good performance from the Pacific batting, with a solid start and wickets in hand allowing a throw of the bat at the end. 133 to get and some politics to go…

Rees opened up with a clinically economic first over, with Chandler opening up with a clunk on the head and dislodging of Abdullah to follow. In came John who professed to be a big fan of the drive (or whatever you call the action of a scythe) and soon got stressed with the short length and good fielding to be excellently run-out by Purcell in the deep. This proved the turning-point and final nail in the New Boys’ coffin.

Or so Pacific thought, as with 36 needed off 2 overs (an easy feat if the newly retired Lara was at the crease) New Boys decided to take the bad light offer from the umpires and go off. Fair enough, but the changing of bats and fact that the lack of a prospective win seemed to have been taken into consideration by the batsman.

The only Lara goings-on were the tomb-raidings as night fell on this confused finish.

Champagne moment? Chandler running out Campbell by mistakenly barging him to the ground.

Unnamed Sources are quoted "I would suggest that if the side batting second are not willing to finish the game then the result should be determined on run rate.

It was hard enough for the fielding side to catch/field the ball but we were all willing to carry on and bowl off of 1 pace if necessary to get a result, besides this they had wasted a lot of time by swapping bats between balls during an over which may or may not of been a deliberate ploy...."

& " they couldn’t win and they knew it. When talking about coming back after they complained and started walking off for light, they asked the run-rate needed for the win rather than whether they could see the ball clearly. It was clear that it was 10% light, but 90% cos they were losing… "

The Captain adds "“really don't think this is a case of cheating - just a new team inexperienced in the short game, early light format. The time delays through changing bats every ball for a couple of partnerships, and the occasional slow change of batsman on occasion were not with the intent to cheat us out of victory. At the end of the game we made the point several times to the captain that they should be better prepared next time with the bat issue and speeding up play. So lets recognise our great performance, treat this as a learning experience and let the sporting spirit of the league continue.” Kissenger
