The Burning Deck
Pacific v Canary Wharf Royal CC at Millfields Park
Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 1pm
Lost by 7 wickets
North East London Cricket League

An inauspicious start to this one, with Canary Wharf winning the toss and asking PCC to have a bat. They had a reputation as a decent bowling unit – rumours abounded that they'd pegged all their opposition for around 100 runs this season in the league, but it was still with a sense of optimism that the openers Rob and Colin strode to the crease to face the first over. It was with a sense of slightly less optimism that they both returned to the non existent pavillion later that same over, and unfortunately the mood was set for the Pacific innings. The one silver lining was a determined and spirited knock from Tom Gane, whose innings embodied the spirit of Heman's Casabianca. He notched his first fifty for the club, and the view was it was probably worth double that, the track doing it's best to live up to the worst reputation of council pitches possible and shoot through more often than bouncing true. Credit where it's due though, Canary Wharf for the most part bowled very well, particularly A Bose who notched up final figures of 8 overs, 2 maidens, 6 wickets for 8 runs. The umpire was announcing bowlers to the scorer via their order in the batting line up, and there were concerns that Canary Wharf were going to be one of those teams, who ask the same players to open the batting and bowling, and just invite 7 or 8 of their mates along to field and watch. They did spread it around a bit and bowled 8 players in the end, but there did seem to be a concentration of talent at the top end of their order.

So, the first innings ending sooner than anticipated, the next thought was on how to extend the game till the pub booking at 6.30 became available. Having set Canary Wharf only 113 to win, hopes rested on the pitch continuing in its treacherous and mendacious ways. As is so often the case though, it had flattened right the heck out, and the oppo never really looked to struggle. Mutz took a sharp catch behind the wicket from Kaleem to send back one opener, and Colin and Raf also bagged one each. The total was chased down inside 20 overs, Canary Wharf the deserved winners on the day. The match was played in good spirit, and the pub let us in early so that was all right in the end. We look forward to our next match against them, as some (most) of our batsmen have a score to settle...

Stats Corner:

  • Tom Gane's first 50 for the club included a 22 over period (over 60 balls faced) spell between his second boundary (in the tenth over) and his third (in the 32nd)
