Happy Mundie Demolishes Denham

Pacific's Shane Mundie starred as the Islington team overcame Denham to make it two wins in a row at the west Middlesex ground. After bowling out the home side on a seamer friendly pitch, Pacific successfully chased a modest target of 72 to win.

With dark clouds looming, Pacific captain Jim Davies took little time inserting the home side on winning the toss. The decision was vindicated almost immediately, as the first ball partnership of Martin Cowling (impressive figures of 8 overs, 2 mdns, 2 for 13) and Darryl Roberts found a nagging line. Breakthroughs came quickly, with two edges behind both sticking (keeper Rob 'Bilbo' Bastin finishing with a club record equalling 4 catches) and a clean bowled from Cowling to remove Denham dangerman Nicholas.

After a rain break, Pacific turned to Shane Mundie and Jim Davies to continue the good work of the openers. Wickets continued to fall rapidly, backed up by some outstanding fielding. The highlight must be Cowling parrying a hard chance 20 feet straight up in the air, only to take the ball from a prone position to the surprise of the batsman. For Denham, only Payne maintained his composure, battling hard before falling in the twenties.

As skipper Davies decided to give himself a blow, the guile of the spinner Allan Roberts was turned to. Denham's lower order tried to turn the game with clean hitting, but the inevitable occured. Mundie (outstanding figures of 8 overs, 5 mdns, 4 for 4, going 10th on Pacific's all time economic spells list) and A. Roberts (2 for 18) wrapped up the innings for 71 all out off 32 overs.

The Pacific reply had the worst possible start with the loss of Adrian Duthie for a duck. Guy Wiehahn and Miles Picknett steadied the ship and gradually moved the score into the twenties, troubled by the accurate bowling of the Denham openers on a pitch that certainly did not improve with age.

After Wiehahn fell to a sharp catch at gully, Braden Grigg came to the crease and immediately looked to push on the rate. With Pacific closing in on victory, Denham regained some hope as Picknett fell to a shooter and Grigg (top scoring with 26) lofted the ball for a good catch at deep backward point.

The Denham hope was quickly ended though, as Kurt Rademaker and Bastin finished off the game, Pacific only requiring 21.5 of their allotted 40 overs. It was left to Bastin (17*) to hit the last runs, scoring three consecutive straight boundaries to wrap up an impressive team performance.

MOM - Shane Mundie - a stunning spell from the Aussie left-armer.

Packing the Kit - Adrian Duthie - fifty last week, a first over duck this week!
