Lay loses toss & game
Pacific v Lessa Wanderers at Away  Sat 26-Aug-2000
Lost by 4 wkts

Pacific's final game at London Electricity Sports Ground against the LESSA side because EDF are selling off this ground, was also marked by LESSA's 1st win agsinst the North of the Thames' rivals in 12 attempts.

P: 80-10. P Attwood 16 J Brown 16 A Clarke 9-2-12-3
LW: 81-6. Brown 24 M Alexander 9-1-43-4

Notably, this was acheived without several 1st choice L players including the prolific all rounder Steve Beck. It was also Ian Lay's 1st chance to Captain the side,(he is the 2nd XI Vice Captain) & sadly his last for this season having chipped the a bone in his shoulder indulging in the less celebrious game known as soccer, whilst representing the Watford Town internet XI. To be fair he did only one thing wrong which was to lose the toss. L's Captain, Steve Eastway had no hesitation inserting as the pitch which had been baked for the previous week had received a thorough soaking. Indeed the match was delayed by 45 minutes as the rain eventually subsided.

P's inform openers struggled with the extra bounce as opening quicks Clarke & left armer, Baxter bowled a disciplined line , pitching the ball just short of a length, & the batters struggled. When the pair finished their spells , P were 31-7 having just levelled their all time lowest total. The change bowlers, David Rugg & Clancy did not pose as much of a threat but the damage had been done & the lower order lead by Jonathan Brown did well to reach the score the did, extras top scoring with 25

Despite the low total, Ian backed his new ball bowlers, Mike Alexander & Darryl Roberts but opening bat Brown's good footwork & the attacking field, left outfield gaps which he expoited well. The game seemed over with Brown going great guns, & despite the quick & costly runs, Mike's attacking bowling paid off with the wickets of 4 of the top 7. Darryl Roberts' role was more of containment & consistency & it was who had Brown caught by Attwood. Great catches by Hardisty & Brown to match their compatriots'sterling efforts in the 1st innings gave P continued hope & the flowing reply was reduced to a stumble with the score reaching 47-6. At this point opening bowler Baxter who had come out at no 6 was joined by his bowling partner Clarke & together, they made the match winning partnership. It was difficult to assess who deserved the man of the match more.

Afterwards, Captain Ian Lay was not only graceful in defeat but philosophical "I was going to do exactly the same if we had won the toss & inserted, the pitch was perfect for bowling after the rain had livened it up to that (bounce & movement) degree, & once the sun had come out, half way through our innings, it just dried out & batting became so much easier. Given their past record against us, it was about time that Lessa probably deserved any luck that went their way on the day"

With this loss, P's 2000 record stand currently :- won 10, drawn 11, lost 4. Next weekend's matches are the return against New Barbarian Weasals in Surbiton on Saturday, while the 1st XI visit Hartley Country Club in Kent.
