Pacific win last-over thriller in the rain
Pacific v Old Camdenians at Old Camdenians Cricket Club  Tue 05-Jun-2012 at 1.30
Won by 2 wickets

It was a bad toss to lose, with rain forecast for the afternoon. Toby called heads, it was a tail, and Pacific found themselves fielding first in a 35-over game.

The new ball was taken by Tom and Sheldon ("The man is Mr Motivation! Such enthusiasm is to be commended," said a source). First change were Rob and Ahmed. Eppy (pictured trying to find his seat at Lord's) bowled some nice chinamen on his debut. Then Ben bowled his leggies. Sheldon came on again. K Dog bowled a good few overs at the end. Old Camdenians finished on 173 for nine. Wickets were pretty evenly shared among the bowlers. Toby took three catches, none of them easy. A couple of chances went down but generally Pacific were good in the field, with Aditya exemplary behind the stumps.

The drizzle had set in during Old Camdenians' innings. Rob (13) and Toby (36) went in to open the batting in the rain. Toby got off the mark with a six, crisply pulling his second ball over the midwicket boundary. Rob fell for 13, then Tom didn't last long. Toby was caught on the long-on boundary. Aditya hit a brilliant 43 in tough conditions, with sawdust in the crease to stop the batsmen slipping over. He was assisted by Sadar, who was later run out on 25 by a direct hit. Their vital partnership was urged on by the K Dog, regularly barking his support from his dry spot in the pavilion. When it was his turn to bat, Kieran - who has promised to buy his own box before his next match - made six. Sinthy (who the opposition lent us) made 10.

On several occasions their groundsman shouted from the boundary that the match should stop, but was ignored.

20 were needed off the last three overs. Then 18 off the last two. Sheldon launched his first ball for a massive six over long-on, meaning we needed four runs off the last over. Ben scampered a single, putting Sheldon on strike. We expected another big hit to finish things off, but only the stumps were hit by the ball. Ahmed came to the crease and stole a single, putting Ben on strike. Ben whacked the ball into his own foot and crumpled to the ground in agony, having twisted his knee in the process. He retired hurt, carried off the pitch. Eppy came to the crease. The bowler bowled a wide, they ran one, and the match was over with two balls to spare.

It was an unlikely victory in difficult conditions.

Forgetful kit custodian Tom later commented: "Crazy days yesterday - all sorts of odd goings on, on top of comedy underwater cricket with people sliding around and falling over as they hit the ball. Then, to top it off, our cab driver arrived totally pissed, and had no idea where he was or how to get us home."

Ben said: "I've just been in the hospital for the last four hours. The knee is not broken but being referred to the fracture clinic soon." Get well soon, Ben.

The scoresheet for Old Camdenians' innings was difficult to decipher, not least because their scorers didn't keep track of our bowling changes. Hopefully it makes some sort of sense though...
