Pacific v Sunbury Chieftains at Kenton Court Meadow
Sat 22 Sep 2012 at 12.30pm
Lost 7 wickets
Friendly fixture

Farcical drops lost the game for Pacific as the Chieftains were tasked with chasing down a meagre target of 163 on a bright but chilly day at Kenton Court Meadow. Skipper Boorman won the toss and elected to bat, and took to the crease with batting partner and occasional Pacifist Rob 'The Alluminator' Allum. Both did well against the pace and bounce of the Chiefs' openers, managing to both see them off and score at a good rate. In one incident Boorman took one short ball in the armpit, and immediately responded with a powerful square cut to the long boundary. With Allum batting sensibly at the other end, the two judged their running well and built a useful partnership of 70. When Boorman departed for 40, the victim of a low full bunger, it looked as though the stage was set for the Islington men to put 200+ on the board. Not so. The rest of the batting did not so much collapse as implode, frustrating for Allum who could only stand and watch the procession of Pacifists that arrived and departed the crease at an alarming rate, unable to cope with the all-spin atack employed by oppo captain Higgins. The Chigwellian himself was to be scalped by the youngest spinner, one of four wickets, pulling powerfully to cow but succeeding only in finding a well-placed fielder, and departing for a crucial 56. A last-wicket partnership of 10 from Tamby and Ahmed pushed the visitors to a sub-par 162.

Tea was beige and plentiful, a veritable feast, the highlights of which were sausage sandwiches and vanilla cheesecake. Top marks to Sunbury's tea lady.

No doubt, having seen the pace and bounce generated on the track earlier, Pacific's seam bowlers were salivating at the chance of taking on Sunbury's batsmen. Indeed, it didn't take long for Satch to tempt the Chiefs' opening bat into top edging to the waiting Boorman behind the stumps. Brown was doing the business at the opposite end, and when Higgins too top-edged to the captain-keeper, things were suddenly looking rosy for the visitors. However, the Chiefs' genial wicket-keeper Sharma, batting at no.4, had other ideas, and soon had the measure of the medium-pacers, slogging with abandon. Debutant leg-spinner Mamun bowled excellently at first change, and succeeded in removing the Chiefs' number 3 with his third ball, Forhad holding a fast, flat chance at mid-on. At this point the game was well and truly in the hands of the visitors, with Smith, rumbling in from the road end, causing no end of problems to batsmen who were intent on playing big shots. One really did feel for the big guy as chances came thick and fast, but all three, yes, THREE, were shelled, all textbook skyers, men at backward point and and deep mid-on culpable. This merely spurred the fortunate batsman on, and he really let Pacific's bowlers have it (and who could blame him after being dropped three times?), the pick of his shots being a switch-hit for four off the woefully unlucky Smith. It was left to Tony and Rob to try and contain the run rate, but unfortunately Pacific had well and truly shot themselves in both feet by this point and Sharma's unbeaten 83, supported by a quick 42 from partner Somi, sealed it for the hosts.
