Not a weekend to be a keeper
Pacific v London Car Rental at Thames Ditton Cricket Club  Sun 22-May-2011 at 2pm
Lost 4 wickets

A lovely warm if windswept day at Thames Ditton.  Thames Ditton having failed to raise eleven we found ourselves playing a work side called London Car Rental.  Thames Ditton kindly provided tea (a feast for £60) and pitch (free of charge) - so a big thanks to them.  Rob saw off some confusion when two teams tried to play a T20 game on our pitch.  Giaco went to Broxbourne before scooting down just in time to bat at 10! We fielded four debutants.

Our innings saw a dedication to fair play that was admirable but exasperating for our batsmen.  Skip Jon's reaction was like a baby throwing the toys out of a pram (not that the calm Florence Bastin was ever going to do that) but in fairness he did get a huge inside edge.  Steve felt similarly hard done by when hit six feet down the wicket.  Overall the top order failed and it was only the tail that enabled us to set a half reasonable target.  Louw grittily held the tail together whilst Khalid and Darryl smashed the ball round the park.  Giaco played well after his late arrival before he was bowled at the beginning of the last over.

Unfortunately the keeper was standing up and the bail flew into his front teeth knocking one out and making another wobbly with blood everywhere.  Paramedics were summoned.  Before they arrived James plundered seven runs with hits to sleeping sub fielders Rob and Darryl.  Tea was a feast but it was over an hour long as LCR looked shaken by the misfortune of their teammate.

On restart at 6.15(!) the match was reduced to 35 overs and in the lack of D/L the target was set at 147 off 35.  James promptly pinged oppo opener in the box first ball to much laughter.   James and Darryl picked up wickets and LCR looked unsettled against awkward bounce achieved particularly by James.  However, the door was not kicked in and the left handed number four soon settled and was a big hitter.  Two chances in the deep were shelled and with a small target that was always likely to be costly although Rob eventually bowled him.  The team bowled well, fielded determinedly (no abject surrender like yesterday) and Jon was especially unlucky not to get wickets. Jon Brown did not concede a single bye as keeper (although one tough chance down leg side went down)
