Webley Secures Tie With Last Ball
Pacific v Broxbourne at Broxbourne Sports Club  Sun 13-Sep-2009 at 1pm
Tied

Jon Webley was the star of the show as Pacific tied with Broxbourne on the last ball of a gripping match.

Pacific batted first on a slow pitch and Webley, coming in at No 3, continued his good form, batting freely for his 41. He hit the only six of the match only to be caught on the boundary the next ball attempting a repeat. His dad would not have been impressed.

Wickets fell but "pinch-hitter" Oliver Haill chipped in with 19, enjoying a 50 partnership with Toby Chasseaud, who mostly used the middle of his bat but at one point resorted to the cue end in his 56, prompting the opposition to call him "John Parrot".

No 11 Dave Morahan, who had also managed to wind Broxbourne up with his strict umpiring, entertained with a quick-fire 11 before being bowled with one ball to spare, helping Pacific to a respectable 223 all out.

After a few sandwiches and a slice of pizza that 12th man Luke Hollman didn't manage to pinch, Morahan was back in the middle, this time holding the ball. The opposition cheered when, struggling into a stiff breeze, his first delivery was signalled a wide. At the other end James Smith toiled hard for no reward, producing a series of expletives.

For Broxbourne, opener Smith batted brilliantly for his century, ably assisted first by MacMillan and then by White, and it looked as if they would knock the runs off with ease. But then, out of nowhere, three run-outs and a tight spell of left-arm spin from Haill began to put the brakes on the innings.

The match could still have gone any way when, cool, calm and collected, Webley took centre stage. Apart from bowling the first no-ball of his life and risking a further diplomatic breakdown with the hosts, his medium-pacers were priceless. He claimed wickets cheaply, and even slipped in a wicket maiden at the death.

Broxbourne needed eight runs off Webley's final over and some frantic scampering brought the scores level with one ball to go. Fielders crowded the bat desperately trying to stop the single as Sargeant attempted to flick the ball through midwicket, only to hear the death rattle.

And thus it was that Pacific secured their second ever tie. Nice.
