Haill turns game twice
Pacific v CYPOS at Civil Service grd, Chiswick  Sun 19-Jul-2009 at 2pm
Won 37 runs

A great comeback victory by Pacific. It was a very blustery day as the wind swept over the plains of Chiswick. There were occasional flurries of rain on an overcast chilly day. Skipper Bastin lost the toss and Pacific were inserted to bat on a pitch with one very short boundary side on boundary and a ropey looking pitch.

It was a bad start. Lahri top edged a ball three foot down leg side to loop a catch to the keeper. Webbo ran out Joe by forgetting the difference between them in running speeds {ed. the Bennett standing start had a lot to do with this!}. Webbo and Bastin circumspectly consolidated on a very variable wicket for ten overs. Once they were in they were able to open against the slower bowlers and as a collected yet another hundred partnership Pacific looked in command until they both managed to giving catching practice off very ordinary deliveries. This sparked a collapse – Smith lobbing a catch to point first ball, Rees bowled leaving a delivery from the leg spinner and Morahan bowled round his legs. Haill, having looked on in horror from the other end, largely swept and hit through mid-wicket on his way to a fine 38 supported by Patel, who hit a great cover drive for 4, and Brown. Brown and Gleadow continued the tail wagging with a valuable last wicket stand.

A good tea in lovely warm pavilion was over too soon.

Morahan and Gleadow were unable to contain Hubbard and Miller’s cutting although they were possibly a little unlucky with some lbw shouts. Smith and Rees kept Pacific in the game with tight spells. However, the fielding was struggling – notably a couple of instances of two fielders waiting for the other to commit to take the looping catching opportunity. Miller retired hurt having pulled a leg muscle. Smith finally got some deserved reward when Hubbard was lbw walking across his stumps. Smith then instructed the VC to put a second slip in for the new bat which the VC failed to do. The ball promptly disappeared to the boundary through second slip prompting much understandable anguish from the bowler. Rees finally produced a chance for the short leg that was kept in place for most of the innings.

Brown and Haill then turned the screw. Haill bowled a little short at times but got a lot of turn for his slow left armers and repeatedly left the batsmen clueless. Brown bowled with great accuracy. The fielding finally sharpened up, Haill racing around in the covers especially, and gave some support to the bowlers. A rain squall meant Gleadow replaced Haill and he promptly did a ‘Webley’ by taking the last three wickets in the same over to wrap up the tail and dropped a sharp return chance.
