Pacific v President's XI at Wray Crescent  Sat 14-Oct-2006 at 11.30am
Lost 2 wickets
Friendly fixture

A truly pulsating match played on a balmy warm day in mid - October. This was what set the scene for an excellent curtain call for not only the season but also President & Club Captain Jim Davies. JIm & his family leaves these shores next month - as indeed does the ever improving Shane Mundie.

However, it was not a triumphant departure for the 4 times Player of the Season winner. Having failed to recruit a specialist keeper for his XI, he stood in himself. There was enough time for Jim to drop Pacific opener Peter Hollman when on nought off another Rob Allum away swinger, before he came to misjudge the extra pace generated by replacement bowler Tony Duckett. The keepers gloves were not enough protection to prevent a double fracture of the finger & therefore spend the rest of the match lingering at Casualty & the X-ray dept at the Whittington.

Rob Allum was the on field vice & stood ably in as the Presidents' bowlers continued to control the match lead by Highgate's Sam Curtis who took 3 wickets including Captain & season top scorer, Jon Webley for a duck.

On the new artifiicial, the bowlers found good bounce but it was the swing that made life so difficult for the batters including Peter Hollman who despite batting through the innings could only score an unconvincing 49 runs as time & again he played & missed. Jon Webley's hopes had lain in a reasonable total which he felt he had bowling resources to defend. The slow damp & well grassed outfield meant big rund had to be gotten the ariel way & as one passing driver in Turle Road would not contest, Lucius Faisal was the ideal man for the job, his 50 coming in 56 minutes & included 10 4s & 2 6s.Sadly, once Chandler had him caught at long off by Simon Smith, the momentum was lost. Debutant Nck Allum standing in for the late withdrawal of Charlie Davids, & Hollman put on another 34 runs but Webley felt that not enough runs were on the board.

In reply, Pacific enjoyed a level of intensity missing in recent games, as Jon Webley made all the smart moves . This was the week that James Gleadow & Chris Atkin returned to top form.

The Presidents' batting stuttered with early dismissals of Oxford CC's MIles Picknett & Highgate's Dougal DeKeller thanks to excellent opening spells from James Smith & James Gleadow. The crowd down the road at Ashburton Grove were now getting really vocal, as was the tannoy system, yet below the helicopters, Chris Atkin rediscovered prime form & Joe Phelan's excellent innings of 53 came to an end when Atkin bowled him an inswinger. The very next clipped Oli Haill's off bail & the pendulum was swinging slowly back to the home side despite the batting's steady on target chase of 4 an over. Commonwelath XI Left hander Tim Vanderpump & Highgate CC'sTony Duckett had to graft as they nerdled & ran well or skillfully exploited gaps. Webley's captaincy continued to make it a fascinating battle for ascendancy & the introduction of off spinner Nick Allum saw further dividends with more breakthroughs. A stunning caught & bowled which ended the virtual match winning innings of Duckett for his 3rd wicket was sadly too late as by now the scores were level but with the final pair of Smith & Curtis at the crease, glory could have been yet shared between these 2 sides.

Earlier, Webley's bowling spell had started poorly as Duckett had hit him for 3 consecutive 4s but he came back superbly with a stunning yorker to dismiss his opposite number & fellow drummer , Rob Allum for 1.

Now he had 6 balls to ensure the tie. The 1st ball shoulder high beamer was surely a no ball but despite the jeers, umpire Picknett did not raise his arm. So all was as it should be 2 balls later when Curtis squeezed the ball past gully for the required run.

A fabulous day's cricket in perfect conditions. A shame that the President was not present to witness his win but he did reemerg triumphant at the post match dinner. It was nevertheless warm memories all round as the 2006 season closed & despite yet another close defeat for Pacific.
