Pacific v Highgate at Victoria Park Pitch 1  Thu 09-Jun-2005 at 6.30pm
Lost 2 wickets

Winning the toss, Pacific decided to bat first, a decision made easier given the late arrival of several players. Indeed, Highgate were allowed to field a couple of substitutes for a few overs as they too waited for stragglers.

Adrian Duthie and Sammy Purcell set off purposefully, working the ball into the gaps, with a couple of boundaries from Sammy taking the run rate to 7 an over, until he was caught behind off the bowling of Atkinson for 20. Pacific threatened to built partnerships, only for wickets to interrupt the momentum at regular intervals. Both Adrian and Guy Wiehahn succumbed to the familiar curse of the run-out, setting the stage for an entertaining middle order partnership between Dougal DeKeller (17 off 10) and Conrad Chandler (27 off 16). Lusty blows from both produced boundaries, but they also ran hard to accumulate runs, including an unlikely 14 (all run) off one over that left the pair flat on their backs from the exertion.

A mini-collapse ensued as they departed to catches in quick succession. Rather than offering a straight bat to a straight ball, Shayne Rees curiously opted for a wild swipe and was duly bowled, bringing Atkinson his third wicket. It fell to keeper Rob Bastin, who made a useful 17 off 11, and skipper Darryl Roberts to push the score on from 104 for 6 up to 135 all out, Darryl offering a catch to mid-on with two balls to spare.

A respectable total did not deter Highgate as they set about the run chase with intent. An opening salvo from Darryl and Dougal failed to make inroads as opener Nick looked to dominate in typically aggressive style, although some less than perfect timing kept the fielding side interested, with aerial shots falling short of the boundary.

A double bowling change brought good spells from Shayne and Conrad, putting Pacific firmly back in the match. Shayne had the dangerous Nick caught and bowled for 26. No 3 bat Don soon followed without troubling the scorers, well bowled by Conrad, who combined pace and accuracy. Shayne’s variation drew a false shot from opener Simon B, pouched by the safe hands of Adrian and returning good figures of 2 for 25. Not to be outdone, Conrad accounted for Paul, caught by Dougal, to finish with a well deserved 2 for 20.

With Highgate at 93 for 5, needing 43 off 4 overs, Pacific should have wrapped it up. However, the bowlers didn’t quite put the ball in the right place, the fielding lost its earlier sharpness and the obdurate Simon and Achers deserve credit for cleverly steering the ball into the gaps and pushing ones and twos, successfully chasing down the target with 2 balls to spare.

The post-match post mortem in the pub failed to explain how we lost, but concluded that no-one was individually responsible and everyone contributed in a well-contested match.

In the aftermath of a high scoring thriller against non-league Highgate, Captain Darryl Roberts contemplates. "Sorry about the result, but everyone played well, although it somehow slipped away in the last 4 overs."

Highgate Cpatain Paul Wolf said "I lost the toss. They batted. We bowled them out for 136 inside their allotted overs. Lots of good catches taken and some great bowling. Our opening stand ran away at over 10 an over in the first 5. Then a couple of wickets went cheaply. The runs kept coming though and our penultimate wicket stand saw us home with two balls to spare."

Pacific All Rounder Conrad Chandler said " Last night was maddening: like being mugged by a limbless, blind, and mute gnat!"
