Deadly Davies Denied as Rain Ruins Finish!
Pacific v New Barbarian Weasals at Civil Service grd, Eltham  Sat 19-Jul-2003 at 2.00pm
Drawn

A deadly spell of slow medium bowling from all rounder Jim Davies - bowling for the first time in two months after suffering a leg injury - destroyed the Barbarian innings that looked well set at 106 for 2. Bowling at reduced pace and exploiting the dry surface with his off cutters - Davies returned the remarkable figures of 8 overs, 6 maidens, 4 wickets for 3 runs.

Having bowled out the Weasels for only 142 - Pacific saw openers Adrian Duthie and Tim Marshall add 65 for the first wicket in good time. However they too were to collapse and found themselves on 126 for 8 - with time in hand - when a heavy thunderstorm finished proceedings early - with both sides feeling they were in sight of victory.

New Barbarian Weasels 142 All Out (Imran 47, John Bishop 36, Jim Davies 8-6-3-4, Darryl Roberts 10-1-20-2, Tim Marshall 2-37)

Pacific 126 for 8 (Tim Marshall 38, Adrian Duthie 25, Omar 4-35, Jez 3-33)

New Barbarian Weasels opted to make first use of a dry and dusty track – and were soon in trouble when Martin Cowling removed dangerman Michaels early on – thanks to a catch behind from skipper Paul Attwood.

However the experienced John Bishop and Imran regrouped cautiously against accurate opening spells from Aussie Cowling and veteran seamer Darryl Roberts – who was making a welcome return to form with some accurate and testing bowling. However change bowlers Ollie Haill and Kurt Rademaker were unable to maintain the stranglehold and the score was soon moving along – until Rademaker produced a good one to bowl Bishop for 36.

Imran and Omar continued to pick off the bad balls and NBW were soon past the 100 mark with only 2 wickets down.A double bowling change saw burly Aussie leg spinner Tim Marshall and returning injury victim Jim Davies take up the challenge. Bowling at reduced pace due to his niggling leg – Welshman Davies exploited the conditions with a series of accurate overs that saw the ball move and bounce prodigiously off the dry surface. With Marshall claiming the vital wicket of Imran at the other end – Davies conceded only 3 runs in an 8 over spell that brought him 4 wickets.

Darryl Roberts returned to claim two wickets – including the prize scalp of Pacific’s own Mike Alexander well caught behind by Attwood for a duck! From a position of strength the Weasels innings collapsed to 142 all out.

This amounted to a gettable but decent target on that wicket – but Pacific openers Marshall and Adrian Duthie soon took control in a 65 run opening stand – despite a typical Alexander spell with the new ball. It was something of a surprise when Duthie was bowled for 25.

Even more bizarre was Marshall’s dismissal – either bowled or hit wicket as the ball span back towards his stumps from a defensive stroke! With Pete Czabotar hitting a quickfire 9 and John Hill going for just 2 things suddenly looked dicey.

They got worse as Davies – having made a patient 10 – scoped a low wide ball into cover’s hands – and Rademaker fell for a duck playing across the line. Martin Cowling contributed a fighting 21 and looked to be taking pacific home until he fell to a contentious lbw decision – soon followed by Matt Patel for 4.

With skipper Attwood (2*) and Ollie Haill (0*) at the crease – a sudden torrential thunderstorm ended proceedings with both sides feeling they might have won.

MOM - Jim Davies - 4 wickets for 3 runs in 8 overs for the Welsh allrounder

Packing the Kit - Mike Alexander - played for the oppo - got a Duck and then took no wickets

XI: P Attwood * + J Davies A Duthie J Hill D Roberts O Haill M Cowling T Marshall M Patel K Rademaker P Czabotar

STATO CORNER -Jim's 4 for 3 in 8 overs is the most economical 4fer in the club's history - and is second equal to Darryl for an 8 over spell economy.
