Stapleford galvanises Pacific
Pacific v Washington at Tufnell Park  Sun 20 Apr 1997
Drawn
Friendly fixture

A (nother) crucial loss of the toss & Pacific's lack of a recognised opener saw a cruelly exposed & vulnerable batting line up blown apart by Richard Minnion & Tim Sparks, the latter taking a five for.

P : 245-6 dec. P Stapleford 116*, M Alexander 74*. T Sparkes 6-2-28-5
W : 239-7. P Demetri 51. L Faisal 3-0-14-1

But at 29-5, North London University student & debutante Paul Stapleford made an excellent unbeaten 116, his 11th century & 1st for Pacific. His 100 came off 87 balls in 96 minutes & broke Nigel Wilkinson's record of 73* v Scholl 14/7/84 for batting at 6.

This was the 3rd highest score on debut & contributed to a partnership of 197 with Mike Alexander (74*) which was the 7th wicket record.(Previous 102* C Jones & J Baglivi v Chiswick Homefield 27/7/91) & was the 2nd highest partnership. Mike himself beat his previous best of 63* with a controlled, disciplined & supportive innings.

In reply, Peter Demitri top scored as Wash batsmen lost wickets in a noble chase. 6 Pacific bowlers took 1 wicket each (+ 1 run out) but again Darryl Roberts looked the most potent.
