Pacific v Washington at Broxbourne Sports Club  Sun 14 Sep 2003 at 1pm
Lost by 4 wkts
Friendly fixture

Lost by 4 wickets - but by all accounts a fine game played in good spirits.

Captain Wilkinson reports "I thought Ollie was superb. I really think he could be a very good player for us and I would like to see him as a regular for Sunday. His fielding was out of this world. Both of his catches were 'catches of the season' and his throwing is - as you said - top class. When he bowled at the death (no easy task) he troubled the batsman and they both paid him compliments after.

As to the game, it was excellant and I am gutted we lost it. I could right a long e-mail about this, but most of it would be because I am sick that we lost. The positive's are that we played this in the right way. I went against all my instincts and made a sporting declaration! In the 'spirit of the fixture' this was the right way to play and there was a lot of 'bonding in the bar' The Wash contingent all shook our hands and had a good chat and they bought a jug! the guy from Broxbourne (Joh Huth) was impressed too and thanked us for putting on such a good game for the spectators!

As well as Ollie's superb fielding and promising bowling, Lucius batted well, as did Marcel at no 6. the highlight though of our innings was a superb stand between Leon and JB. It was good at last to see players building an understanding and putting together a score for the team.

lucius hits out    ollie chills out

In the field, although some players spent too much time having a go at each other rather than the oppo's, there was class bowling from Marcel and JB. i couldn't quite manage the last over we wanted or needed, but I did hold it steady from one end and get a couple of vital wickets. Matt H put in a good display behind the stumps after a shaky start (not helped by some loose bowling) and ended up standing up and putting real pressure on the batsman. Lucius got a great run-out and we nearly got another corker from Leon at the death (who knows, if the umpire had been awake....!).

Again, Ollie's fileding was superb. Once we had got the first wicket - quickly followed by another couple - we relaxed and tore into the opposition, but were thwarted by the Gluckman. As he said afterwards, he hasn't been able to play that innings for us yet!.That's just what we didn't want at that time - a level-headed and 'adhesive' batsman! Before I bowled him as he started to swing out, I thought we would never get him out!

The toss was pretty crucial of course. When Pete Demitri won it he said - we'll bat (yes!) I mean bowl (Dam!). Let's hope the wicket is in the same condition next week and we win the toss!"
