Pacific all at sea in Crouch End

Friendly fixture

During the coldest August Bank Holiday on record, PCC were well beaten by a stong Crouch End side at Shepherd's Cot. The warning signs were there before the first ball was bowled - with Crouch End performing both cardiovascular and skills-based warm-up drills, and a rare sighting of ex-Pacific man Jay Lakhani. The game was nonetheless enjoyable and played in a good spirits, with toxic moments few and far between.

Pacific fielded first. Will Gingell and newcomer Jon Hungin opened the bowling with accurate, disciplined performances. Will, in particular, deserved more than his one wicket, having Crouch End's opener Rob clearly caught behind in the first over, but falling victim to some mental (/biased) umpiring. Crouch End's openers scored slowly until around drinks, and it looked like Pacific might be able to restrict Crouch End to a chaseable total with the help of Riz's shrewd field-tweaking. Ex-Pacifian Lakhani looked in good form and like he was ready to move up a gear, before being removed by a sublime flipper from the A-Bomb, aided by a few mind games from Mutz behind the stumps. Unfortunately, Crouch End's 3 and 4 were high quality batsmen and looked on top of the bowling, despite excellent spells from Riz and Rahul and the returning Paul Davis's funky stylings. Crouch End closed on 225, having accelerarated rapidly since drinks.

Tea was the usual Covid affair to which we've become accustomed during the "new normal". Hopefuly we'll soon again be able to enjoy vats of veggie curry in Crouch End like the good old days. Crouch End's usual chef was present, but alas with no curry. Pacific's number 5 ordered his tea to the ground via Deliveroo.

Rahul and Amandeep went out to open the batting against some quality fast bowling from the Crouch End side which included their first and second team captains. They both stuck in there alright, with Amandeep taking the fight to their openers with some attacking strokeplay, although neither could get going and post a big score. Newcomer Ben O'Connor looked solid at the crease before adjudged LBW, and newly-engaged Jasbir fell victim to the lethal Siraj. While the lucky lady was in attendance, supporting Jas, sadly lady luck was not.

Burnham and Rizwan were next to the middle, and put on a decent partnership against Crouch End's spin attack. Riz did most of the work, looking dangerous and bludgeoning a few massive sixes (losing a few balls out of the ground), which momentarily stunned Crouch End's field into silince and prompted Lakhani to comment to his team mate "I've seen him do this before". What Jay probably hadn't seen before is Riz hitting consecutive boundaries and then attempting a reverse pull shot against the spin following a fielding change, leading to his dismissal. Mutz came and left shortly afterwards for a rare duck, following which Crouch End ran through Pacific's lower order in short order, despite Will playing some nice aggressive shots and being unlucky to fall to a quality catch on the long boundary. By this point, however, Pacific's hopes of reaching Crouchy's target had anyway long since sailed (in truth, that happened when Riz was out).

Post-match revelry included a village fete-style drinking/running in circles game in which Rahul and Ahmed starred, and some more catching practice for Crouch End's committed youngsters.
