The NELCL season opener saw Pacific CC come up against cricketers (and podcasters ) I Don't Like CC, a fixture which seemed destined to be spoilt by rain from as early as Wednesday in the preceding week. Despite the forecast, the Pacific XI arrived at Millfields Park under a changeable sky which did not quite reflect those being reported on TMS in Manchester (!).  Having prepared the square, which had not long been cut in and felt a little green and bowler friendly, Skipper Garrett won the toss and elected to bat first, in a game that had been reduced to 35 overs in the hope it could be completed.

Rob and Toby got to 37, taking the shine off the new ball and a pretty handy opening pair of bowlers, showing that it would indeed be a difficult day with bat in hand (Robs 3 coming from 21 deliveries). Toby reached 35 cracking 5 boundaries before being bowled by a leg spinner, Rahul and Mark arriving and departing facing the same amount of balls for 9 and 8 respectively seeing Pacific fall to 71 - 4. Mutz and John then put together the partnership of the innings, both steadying the ship and accumulating 50 plus runs on the way to 159-9. After a little bit of biffage from Soden, a quick 2 from Ed and an even quicker 0 from Skipper Garrett, Aroon and Ahmed saw off the bowling attack and both finished with red ink. Ahmed's familiar 0* could have been somewhat different though...Arriving a little after the toss after his schlepp from Guildford, he had not been informed that the game had been shortened to 35 overs. This deprived us seeing him cut loose and break out his arsenal of attacking stroke play for the last 5 overs as he had planned, which was a great shame.

A greater shame was that the second innings lasted 8 balls at the behest of the weather. The opposition came out with attacking intent that would one can only imagine would have guaranteed a result given more time. But in these strange and unprecedented times, there was some comfort in BST weather fouling up a game of cricket. After some prolonged discussion about a restart, the (none) result was called at 1630, and some quick pints were had at the Princess of Wales under a "sun" shade. We hope to see the opposition again next season in more clement times.
