No disGrace in a losing Chase
Pacific v Graces at Highgate CC
Sun 20 Sep 2020 at 12 noon
Lost by 24 runs
Middlesex & Essex Invitation League

Hi, I'm Tom Ireland, reporting for Pacific TV.

A tremendous effort from Pacific here tonight, who turned around a very dominant start from Graces and put on a valiant and exciting chase. Sadly it was not to be, with the home team left to wonder would could have been if neutral umpires were available and catches were taken.

Despite very good opening spells from McGinnigle and Howes, and with the help of the umpires, Graces raced past 100 for 0. Their 'new opener'/ ringer Archie looked ominously organised and set for a big score.

Ireland was bought into the attack with heads starting to drop, and was frustrated from his very first ball when what most would say was an undisputable LBW decision was turned down by the opposition umpire. When his second ball was skied straight up and dropped, and his third was pumelled for six, it looked like it was going to be a long, hot afternoon for the nice guys of north London cricket.

However, Pacific persevered, and after Ireland prised out both openers, captain Garret took out Grace's middle order in his eight-over spell of flighted offies, severely hampering their efforts to put on a big score.

After initially looking set for 300+ Graces struggled to make it past 240, thanks to Garret's 4-for and Rahul's energetic death bowling. The outfielding was tight all innings, especially from Jas at point, who made a slew of important stops and a good diving catch.

With Pacific determined to umpire in the same fashion as the oppo, Graces opened the bowling with their new opening bat/ ringer. Sadly new father Tim was simply too sleep deprived to put up any resistance to Grace's first appeal, giving Amandeep out LBW in the second over. As usual our Moral Highground-ometer was high, but our chance of winning was about 1%.

Jas hit some nice boundaries, including a truly enormous legside six, but when he and Deighan fell Pacific found themselves wobbling at 23-3. Toby and Rahul played nicely and stabilised the innings, but the rate was soon creeping up to around 8 an over and their teammates were baying from the sidelines to give it a moo.

After stepping up the pace, both were out giving it a moo.

Burnham and Ireland made quickfire contributions to the total, and with Riz looking dangerous, suddenly the target looked maneagable and Graces were looking short of bowling options. Thanks to 46 from Riz and cameos from Howes, McGinnigle and Garret, a very gettable 25 was needed off 18. Sadly Riz was out to a stunning catch at cover and Pacific were all out.

Pacific may feel they were unfortunate here after that solid performance and with several decisions not going their way. But after knocking elbows with the oppo and having a few drinks pitchside in the evening sun, they will move on to their next game at Fortress Wray on Saturday.

Here's what the in-form Ben Burnham had to say, after a few beers, on what was a really tough outcome for the boys to take.

"It's annoying. But I mean, actually it really doesn't f***ing matter does it?"

Back to you in the studio Keith.
