Pacific v Fives at Minchenden Association

Middlesex & Essex Invitation League

Our first Sunday league game. Or so I thought!

We arrived at Southgate ground to be greeted by the usuals undulating pitch that  was hiding the odd pea roller and the one that popped up. At least their would be plenty of good explanations to why we were out!

Fives veterans were all playing today. It was nice to see them all - Suri, Sugi, Siddy, Suji, Sumi and Graham. They were surprised to not see the familiar faces of past encounters. This was a new Paciifc team, full of youth and energy.

We agreed a 40 over game as a friendly. Pacific won the toss and decided to bowl. It was not long before we were taken off as the rain had started. Luckily this was the only interruption for the day.

We had Hugo open the bowling and as usual showed some fine control of the vector.  The fives batsmen recognised his skill level and played his 8 overs out. On the other end we had the wonderful smiling Sumant. He did have a couple of plum lbw’s but as we know a good opening batsmen is not allowed to be given out lbw on Southgate.

A notable spell by Joe Deigan, who found a pitch that suited him and troubled batsmen from the start. Star of our bowling was Eppy. Now this is a 100 per cent cricketer, no half measure here . His style of bowling is full of character. The drama he builds up with his tweaking of the ball and staring down the batsmen before he has even bowled . His guile landed him 3 wickets with an excellent spell of left arm leggies. As usual Ahmed supported beautifully with with his own brand of leg spin.

We played hard and kept the momentum going through the innings, we took wickets regularly and a couple of wonderful catches in the outfield by Tom and Rahul. Amandeep kept wicket admirably on this notoriously difficult pitch and bagged himself a stumping. The target was set 256.

I knew fives had their full unerringly accurate bowling attack. After 10 overs we were about 20 runs with no freebies for the batsmen. First out was Rob, our opener. Rahul and Tom dug in but  the run rate was ever climbing. As it was a friendly the instruction came to give it go. As soon as this was said the wickets started falling. Colin who had thrown himself around at cover while fielding, played some beautiful shots before succumbing to the slowest of slowest bowling . Same can be said for Skipper Mutz who was out to the father and son combination of Sujan and Om for a duck. Apparently there is a video of this! Amandeep was unlucky to be given out lbw as the ball had hit his glove. Hugo and Eppy banged a few at the end. Joe played Ben Stokes for the day and done well with both bat and a ball.

We ended up for 131 for 9 and thought we lost the game. However our esteemed match organiser Pete is in negotiations to call this game a timed game. It is my understanding it has now been declared a draw. Well done to Ahmed who played 2 games on the weekend and stopped the all out on both days. A pair of not out ducks!
