Too Toxic
Pacific v Old Citizens at Wray Crescent

James Gleadow Memorial

Pacific were in good spirit as they turned out at Wray Crescent for the annual James Gleadow memorial game with Old Citizens.

After being put in, Pacific weathered the early losses of Jon Webley and John Thornton, as Toby and John Deighan sought to build a strong foundation. A strong one indeed, with the pair putting on 204, the joint second highest third wicket partnership in Pacific history (see stats corner below). Toby played a typically classical innings, with boundaries around the park and a couple of beautiful sixes, a personal highlight being a flick of the wrist for 6 beyond cow corner. John Deighan played an electric innings, despatching some slow bowling to reach a well-deserved maiden ton for Pacific. Particular highlights include some large sixes to cow corner and swivel hitting to fine leg. The partnership saw Pacific finish on a solid first innings total of 279.

Pacific started positively with the ball too. A poor call saw the Old Citizen opener ran out for a duck early on, courtesy of quick work from the electric Basi at point. PBD and Maccy G were in good form with the ball, with the latter bowling the number 3 in quick succession. Then Riz stepped up to the crease, setting up a hotly anticipated contest. In the first innings, it’s fair to say Maccy G’s patience was tested, being asked to field the last few overs to enable Riz to pick up a 'urgent' Uber Eats delivery. As Riz hit a couple of typically big boundaries, and one six, it seemed game on. However, a lovely swinging delivery by a seething Maccy G saw the dangerman sent back to the pavilion.

The spin twins of Korgy and Garrett continued to pile pressure on Old Citizens. Following a good cameo from Keyana '9 lives' Sapp, Aroon took his 3rd wicket (20 for the season) following a good catch by Toby at cow corner.

With the oppo at 94-6, skipper Garrett decided to shake up the bowling, opting for the hidden talents of Burnham and Basi. And what a surprise they had in store. Burnham, unleashing Malinga-esque medium pace, proved too hot to handle, claiming his first wicket and also striking Mutz on the tooth. This particular incident followed Mutz ripping Garrett for the lack of spin and his large dentist bill. Meanwhile, Basi’s left arm leg spin proved too toxic, with a combination of googlies and top spinners leading him to claim a personal best of 3 wickets for 11 runs.

It was a pleasing end to what proved to be a rare thumping win for PCC, with a small group heading to celebrate at the WB Yeats.

Stats Corner

  • 204 partnership between Deighan & Chasseaud is the joint second highest third wicket partnership in PCC history behind Richards & Webley's 209* in 2010. The tie is with Tom Ireland and Sam Gilliat who picked up their 204 in 2014. I think it's the eighth partnership of more than 200 in PCC history.
