Tour finishes with a ballache

Tour fixture

And so, after two successful tour matches, we came to Bloemendaal to play the final fixture of the tour. The President had been handed the captaincy by Walt the night before, which was a bit of a balls up of a decision (more on that later).

Bloemendaal was described to us by previous opposition as the poshest bit of the Netherlands, and it was certainly a glorious countryside scene that we arrived to after an hour or so's travel from the hostel. Locating the clubhouse, we found an impressive level of support in attendance, and a high standard of cricket from Bloemendaal's first 11 fixture in the 2nd div of the national league. Thankfully we were playing a friendly 11 on the 2nd pitch.

Bloemendaal won the toss and elected to bat. Their skipper, the intimidatingly named Storm, slightly lowered the level of intimidation on offer by informing us that he would be playing in lipstick, having lost a bet with his wife the previous evening. He looked marvelous. PCC came out of the traps strongly though, Sam Howes overcoming the skippers extreme reluctance to bowl him (and thus give him a chance of closing the gap at the top of the wickets taken column for PCC this season) to cartwheel the opener's stumps early. Soden was bowling better than his figures suggest, and deserved a wicket, despite slightly losing his radar at the end of the spell. After bowling out the openers, Garrett turned to spin twins A-Bomb and Korgy.

PCC tightened the screws, and seemed to be in a commanding position, despite a few dropped catches, the most egregious of which was by your correspondent. After Korgy enticed a ball to be chipped up to mid on, I found myself beneath it. I know I got hands on it, and quite how it went from them to my right testicle with such speed, I neither know nor care. The result was a collapse to the floor, whilst Korgy valiantly tried to protect his bowling figures and a low target by beseeching me to get up and throw it in. Alas, it was several minutes before I could move again, though thankfully the oppo were sporting and stopped running after the second to laugh at me. Creatures and the President then had a little trundle, Garrett picking up the wicket of their skipper Storm in the process. Bloemendaal finished on 167-6, and tea was enjoyed back at the clubhouse. There was a cheeseboard, which was impressive.

Back out to start the Pacific innings, Walt and Reny unfortunately fell quickly to good balls, leaving usual skipper Chasseaud to steady the ship with James Soden. A slightly slow start then saw acceleration, and Bloemedaal resisted the temptation to push the field back for a sporting amount of time, as the two batsmen started to score more freely. Sadly Soden was bowled attempting to up the rate, and a run out of Toby (a few pacificos were heard to remark it's usually the other way round) brought Mutz to the crease for some final fireworks to try and win the match. Despite smiting a 4 over midwicket without any time to play himself in, sadly the death bowling was too good, and we fell short by 3 runs. A good effort from all, and a lovely way to end the tour with beers in the clubhouse. Sad not to end the tour with a third win, but it gives us room to improve, and I think we can all agree it's Walt's fault for selecting the captain badly, and nothing to do with the captaincy. Ahem.
