Sore heads little cause for con-Cerne
Pacific v Cerne Valley at Cerne Valley  Sun 08 Jul 2018 at 2.30pm
Lost 13 runs
Tour fixture

Abridged version: Several Pacificos were nursing pretty sore heads. Phil Smith sat this one out but was fired up by a local fireman. Brett Custard came to watch the game, which was played not far from the giant chalk man with a giant nobbly cricket bat and his giant nob out.

Sunday was another scorcher. Earliest to rise was Aly Duncan, who set off on an exploratory ramble of the surrounding countryside. Having got entirely lost, the Gator serendipitously stumbled across a rural McDonalds, from where he put in an emergency rescue call. Fortunately, this meant he and Mutz could bring back breakfast for the team. With a couple of hours to kill, we headed down to Chesil Beach, where several of our number had a refreshing swim. Stockton described it as the highlight of his weekend. The convoy then beat a path to the idyllic Cerne Valley CC.

Two men who were nowhere to be seen at the beach were Garrett and Smith. As the rooster crowed in the early morn, Saturday night's pissheads-in-chief responded with an unequivocal "cock-a-doodle-don't". They caught us up at Cerne Valley, where DC Smith willingly took charge of the scorebook for the afternoon. Garrett battled through but was a little worse for wear.

We fielded first, skipper Howes having lost the toss. Cerne Valley had some impressive youngsters, and made it to 192 from 40 overs. We bowled well. Hussain was the pick with an economical three-fer, making use of the spinner's wicket and being desperate to make amends for being rather demoralisingly tonked the previous day. Mutz put in some lovely work with the gloves, taking a catch and three stumpings under the watchful gaze of Dorset legend and PCC 2017 Player of the Season bronze medallist, Brett Custard.

Tea was again excellent. The consensus was that rock cake was the standout offering among a panoply of homemade delights.

Duncan and Burnham went out to open the batting. Off the back of a run of poor scores, Burnham put together a dogged 32 from 82 balls, fending off some hostile bowling from opener Whitmarsh. Even Stockton struggled a little with Whitmarsh's bounce and rapidity, although he still managed to equal Burnham's 32 in little over half as many balls. Our scoring was pretty slow, and we were unable to utilise a fast outfield due to some shrewd, defensive field placement by CVCC. Aroon passed his 100 for the tour before being stumped, and Mutz came to the crease around ten overs from the end. It was a valiant effort to try to get us over the line, as Mutz hit 44 off 39. We tried to call Custard to the crease to boost our boundaries, but Brett had had a few and wasn't really feeling it. Sadly we came up just 13 runs short.

So that's it. We lost two games but it was a classic weekend, enjoyed by all. #keeppacifictoxic
