Singh on song
Pacific v Barclays at Away  Sun 16 Jul 2000
Drawn
Friendly fixture

As Barclays have had to sell this georgeous ground, V Singh will probably be the most dissapointed.

BB 220-3 dec. V Singh 107* M Alexander 9-0-29-1
P: 134-7. P Hollman 38 M Alexander 33* Richards 12-4-19-4

On a 6 month cricket vocation from India, he put on a fine display of chanceless stoke play, being particularly strong on the onside. Initially, circumspect as he carefully waited for the bad ball. Mike Alexander who bowled well overall but 4 leg side full tosses were each despatched with aplomb for boundaries.

The run rate did decelerate initially with the introduction of Hollman & Frank Baglivi as reward for their accuracy but still the bad balls were put away. Pacific bowlers were not without limited success though as 1 wicket apiece were claimed by John & Frank Baglivi & to Mike Alexander. However, the introduction of off spinner Allan Roberts saw 44 runs taken from his 4 overs, & Barclays declaring shortly after Singh had reached his century & the hard hitting Schulz (68) his 1/2 century. Heads & standards slipped in the field understandably in acknowledgement of 2 fine innings.

The pitch was true & held no demons but throughout the game it was the quicks & seamers that the batsmen seemed comfortable with. This was finely illustrated by Peter Hollman & John Baglivi's opening partnership of 65 in 15 overs which gave the reply a foundation which appeared to give more than realistic hope of reaching the target.

With thoughts turning to a 100 run 1st wicket partnership before the assault, Hollman was dismissed to spinner Richards failing to clear mid off. & with that wicket the batting truly collapsed, John Baglivi (17) out next over, followed by Ben Hardisty (1), Tim Mileham (1) Jonathan Hardisty (6) & John Hill (0).

With fine control & ability to turn the ball both ways, Richards scythed down the top order, leaving Capatin , Nigel Wilkinson & all rounder, Mike Alexander with little choice than to consolidate the innings & salvage pride. At least that was assured as the 2 put on an unbeaten 53 run partnership. The post match feeling was still one of disbeleif - 65-1 to 81-7. Tim Mileham who was not far from inconsolable just could not beleive the ball that got him out from Richards "it pitched outside leg & took off stump & I was told he was an off spinner !!" Warne to Gatting anyone ?
