Campbell puts game out of reach
Pacific v Hackney Grasshoppers at Highgate CC  Sun 14 May 2000
Won by 92 runs
Friendly fixture

This was HG's inaugural home match at this pleasant suburban ground. The outfield was very boggy & the grass had not been cut thanks to Saturday night's downpour. A fact exemplified in that only 11 4s were scored in the game.

PCC: 182-10 J Campbell 77 J Baglivi 26 Down 17-0-89-6
HG: 89-10 D DeKeller 11 M Alexander 11-2-18-3 A Roberts 8.4-1-23-3

Opting to bat first on a steamy muggy day, openers Baglivi & Hollman were cautious but due to inconsistent bounce were never really able to score freely. That said, their 65 run partnership was P's foundation & the highest partnership of the match. With Baglivi bowled by Down, we saw the arrival of Campbell to the wicket & only Captain Lay was able to stay with him as the bounce became more irregular.

With Steve out bowled to Down again, the batters came & went & a possible 200 became a likely 130 before Campbell really got tucked in & with amazing assuredness & style, played the match winning innings, scoring 4x6s & 3x4s in his 47 ball 77. Awesome. Johnny Down took real credit with his change from seam to spin in his 2nd spell picking up all his wickets in the latter.

Alexander & Darryl Roberts - the opening seamers, despite the former not bowling as well as recently, ensured a cautious response from HG & with the former yorking the dangerous opener Stafford for 3 the pattern was set. Their efforts had given P a comfort zone from which it appeared unlikely HG could win. The change to Frank Baglivi & Allan Roberts & to spin brought about their defeat.

Both spinners bowled with assurance & flight, happy in the knowledge that the runs were in the bank as a flock of close fielders illustrated. Dougal De Keller seemed the most capable but when he was out to Frank to a fine catch by Darryl Roberts in the extra cover region, the walls caved in for HG. Frank also take a stunning catch at short cover as he leapt salmon like to a retrieve a ball that appeared would never reach him in dismissing Down. Captain Steve Lay's tactics were proven right on the day as he looked back in quiet satisfaction on a fine team display.

This was P's 3rd win on the bounce & continued their season's unbeaten run to 5.
