Plucky Pacific hang on for draw
Pacific v Chigwell at Old Chigwellians Club  Sun 31-Aug-2014 at 1.00pm
Drawn

It was a sunny, with intermittent clouds, day. Pacific won the toss and skip Toby consulted widely before going with the popular vote to bowl.  We were fielding with only 9 and a half (Chigwell lent us a youngster called James who tried hard but is not as yet a great fielder) and it was not easy.  Nuggsy benefited from some early dampness in the wicket to extract some movement and also from Rob's reticence to attack.  Rob as ever got warned about a mankad.  The other bowlers all suffered from the lack of fielders and a more aggressive intent from Chigwell.  Sheldon bowled some cracking deliveries but didn't get any luck.  The ground fielding was not great generally despite Sheldon and Kieran's fine efforts.  Toby and Kieran kept the troops going.  Rob failed to declare early enough as he sought to secure his 100.

Tea was good.  262 was always unlikely target for a Pacific 9 with a longish tail.

Fine early Chigwell bowling reduced us to 32/4.  Steve Lay was unfairly accused by Chigwell post a claim for a catch behind. At this point victory was really unlikely and survival a long way a way.  Thus Toby and Nuggsy largely opted to have a long net.  Toby was supreme in making another hundred - he just moved effortlessly through the gears, so calm and never looked troubled.  Nuggsy meanwhile might as well not bothered with the bat - his incessant leaving annoying Chigwell.  It was a shame we were down on numbers as 262 would have been chaseable with just one or two more bats such is Toby's form, reaching his hundred with a six off the last ball of the game off his opposite number's bowling. As it was a couple of batting points were secured.
