Pacific v Nuxley at Away  Sat 22 Aug 1998
Friendly fixture

Without a win for over a month, Pacific looked to have a wonderful opportunity thanks to a fine bowling & catching display.

N : 120-9 (ao). M Jones 28. I Lay 9-3-25-5.
P : 92-8. S Lay 38*. Andrews 6-3-9-2

An easy win for Pacific against their fellow tourists from SE London last season in Somerset, gave Pacific genuine hope of notching up a 4th win in an undistinguished season. Certainly an excellent opening spell from quickie Darryl Roberts 13-8-15-1 easing his way back from injury, saw him beat the bat time & again. Indeed, he bowled 6 consecutive maidens during his spell (only the 6th time achieved in the club's history). Ian Lay benefited from this pressure & picked up 5-25 as Nuxley looked to move things along. Opener Michael Jones (28) top scored & played solidly off the front foot as he tried to diminish the sometimes steep bounce. A steadyish start saw Pacific going into the final hour (20 overs) needing 84 to win with 7 wickets in hand but with the dismissal of Frank Baglivi (20) with 42 still need at 4.2 per over all hope rested with Captain Steve Lay. Steve (38*) saw the match out to a draw as the run rate required rose & the combination of Nuxley's seamers and the setting sun robbed Pacific of a morale boosting win as 5 wickets fell for 12 runs. The pitch was east/west & Steve reasoned that the ball simply could not be seen until after it pitched thereby making it impossible to play. "If it had not have been for the low setting sun blinding the batters we would have won that game" he said shortly afterwards.
