Locksbottom hit Tugmutton heights
Pacific v Locksbottom at Tugmutton Common, Locksbottom  Sun 17-Apr-2011 at 2pm
Lost 5 Wickets

Pacific CC’s sedately constructed 143  was insufficient to make Locksbottom sweat at a Tugmutton Common bathed in April sunlight. The Pacific innings comprised several double figure scores, Hardisty (16) and Webley (29) both looking assured at the crease, but none could push on to the fifty  which might have caused tea time angst among the Locksbottom top order at the prospect of chasing big runs as they nibbled on hot cross buns.

17-year-old Charlie Buck, generously loaned to us by Locksbottom for the day, backed up his pre-match chutzpah with on field goods, hitting a breezy  25 against his team mates and peers, while Steve Lay (16) cut with pleasing early season timing. But in the mid to later overs we became becalmed by Lockbottom’s skilful medium pace and slow bowlers, a late flourish by Holliday (19) and Brown (11)  not enough to significantly alter match momentum.

While the two opening bowlers, Jons Brown and Webley, operated in tandem, the dream weavers among us dreamed of Pacific victory. Brown ran up the hill willingly for eight overs on the bounce, locating Tugmutton Common wicket’s ‘corridor of uncertainty’ with pressure inducing regularity. Inveigling number three Whitton in to forcing the play  against an immaculate delivery which clipped the top of off stump was his moment of the day - but figures of 1 for 6 off 8 with 4 maidens tell a tale of continuous excellence. Vincent Croft picked up a brace of wickets with deceptive seamers to further encourage the quixotic.

Then Locksbottom’s Lewis wrenched the game away from us with masterful batting elegance, the right hander picking off a succession of boundaries at will off spinners Mullens and Roberts to take the score past 100. His nonchalance  would ultimately get the better of him though. Strolling a single, he was run out by a deft pick up and throw from Duthie at the bowler’s end. But the damage had been done.

Other news

Holliday’s unprecedented ‘staycation’

Mr Holliday displayed savvy negotiating ability, having seen young Buck raise the dreaded (but youthful) finger for an LBW decision. Clearly not keen on ceding his early season wicket,  Holliday rejected the teenager’s decision, insisting on bat pad, which was graciously accepted by Locksbottom’s captain Baldwin. And so he survived.

Sartorial Style

Donning a white umpire jacket, and decked out in retro aviator glasses as he took to the field to arbitrate, skipper Webley reminded Holliday and Mullens of a young Don Johnson, and was imagined taking the lead role in an Orpington based version of the seminal Miami undercover detective series, ‘Tugmutton Vice’.
